Is the WD800JB HD as fast as the Maxtor Plus 9 80 gig HD with 8 mb of cache? I already looked on storagereview.com

I checked a xbit review too but the maxtor and WD HD were the bigger sized HDs. :[ What would be the best overall drive for fastest speed? Seems like the maxtor plus 9 HD has less of a access time but is the WD800JB HD still faster even with its higher access time?

If Maxtor's bigger model is fast the smaller version should be just as fast or faster.

Ok. How would you determine if the maxtor Plus 9 HD is a 60 gig platter, 68 gig platter, or 80 gig platter?

I have the 80 gig maxtor and have a new build sitting here with the wd drive in it. According to HDtach the maxtor is definately the faster drive of the 2. most of the 80 gig Maxtors have 2 60 gig platters as i understand it. I have read in SR's forums of some that have the 80 gig platter. Mine has 60 gig platters there is a character in the serial number that will indicate which platter it has but i don't recall it offhand. will have to hunt around SR's forums to find the info again.

Reports say the smaller ones mfg'd after a certain date use the same 80gb platters that the 200GB drive uses. Regardless, there've been numerous reports here similar to NesuD's who own both, saying the Maxtor's are indeed faster. Still a toss up IMO based on price/gb and the need for rebates.

I own both and I would say the Maxtor is faster. I benchmarked it with Sisoft. It's crap but it was obvious and I could FEEL it. Both my drives are 120gb.

I thought the only difference between the P and L is the amount of cache in the hdd?? The L series had 2mb cache and the P is 8mb??

Yah...the only way to tell is if you knew the stepping/serial numbers where Maxtor started using 80GB platters, or physically opening your drives :Q (as they do in the reviews). Not worth it IMO, as my RAID 0 is blistering fast as is.

Ok here is a thread at SR where the 2 platter versus 3 platter drives are discussed. Apparently the 2nd character in the serial number on the drive indicates the number of heads. 2 heads and 80 gig platter 3 heads 2 60 gig platters. Linky
