IMO it is - WC3 frozen throne is still big on battlenet, if you can play RTS decently you should do fine. Plus the single player campaigns are lengthy and fun.
There's also a superb mod, i mean really top notch, called DOTA
After 3+yrs i'm still playing it and they are still updating it. 82 unique heroes now.

Plus that rig will run it flawlessly @ 16x12

A more in depth RTS would be Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War + the expansions. No mods, but the multiplayer is mayhem, lots of fun.

I won't mention any more games as there are several recent threads on that already.

GLHF and if you buy WC3 and play on Azeroth, i'm Goresplash.

The WC3 original campaign and expansion campaign for single player were both superbly done. Worth original retail price I paid.

Both the original campaign and Frozen Throne are great one player. I shy away from the online play only because the disparity between the newbies and veterans are just too great (more so than Starcraft). I got slaughter so fast and so often it's not even funny. The online community is not exactly the friendliest either. Joining a 2v2 or 3v3 while being a newbie will have you get blamed and scolded for losing the game for your team.

Yes, it really is worth $39.99

I think the RoC is worth $29.99 in stores and TFT is worth $19.99

I read this from somwhere, but its a good plan and it works :D If your allies start to annoy you for sucking etc just build as many workers as possible and strip your side of the map of trees and any resources you find, sit back and watch your allies get smashed lol.

you talking online or singleplayer?

And single hero strats can work, to a point.

I'd love to help :)

It's key to learn the shortcut keys for hero abilities.
Group melee, ranged and magical into seperate groups.
Before we go into further detail, what races have you tried, which do you like, what's your play style?

this is all single player so far. i've tried human and night elf so far. all are under RoT not tFT. i liked human so far with priests and having heal autocasted.

i did ok with humans but nothing special. i think i got lucky that orcs had just gotten done with clearing a creep when i showed up. as night elfs i got my ass kicked bad by humans first then orcs another game.

i guess i try pound it out and forget about magic most of the time. that's probably my first problem.

If you're human, you need to use magic to it's fullest. Priests, sorceresses, archmage spells, etc.

Night Elves are very powerful as well, in a different way of course. Group ranged like archers seperately and keep them AWAY from melee if at all possible. Melee (or close to it) like huntresses and bears are tougher, but huntresses get mowed down by ranged attacks. Night elves are fast and weak, as a general rule. Play to your strengths.

Mouse over the tooltips of each unit to see their damage type and armor type to better gauge and manage your encounters.

Turtling is passably effective as humans, they have nice cheap towers, but night elves not so much. In general it's a failed tactic, unless you expand as well...which is kinda not turtling anymore :)

Defeating orcs usually means avoiding melee. Slow/stun their grunts if you can and pick them off one by one (focus fire with your ranged units is a great idea to keep in mind). Dryads can poison, which slows, and the keeper of the grove hero for NE can ensnare grunts which allows archers to slaughter them in quick shape, not to mention summoning a meat shield in the form of treants. Kill kodos ASAP as they devour units. You'll get them back if the kodo dies fairly soon after it takes a unit.

Humans should have a melee wall to protect riflemen and casters. Footmen are alright, especially if you can keep your healers up there and if you have a paladin with his aura and heals. Knights are very good and can fast strike around a melee wall against enemy casters and ranged units.
Again, humans as a rule NEED their magic to be effective.
