Is the wait at the Social Security office as bad as DMV?

I'm finally getting around to going with my wife to get her name changed at Social Security (to my last name). We're planning on getting there when they open (at 9am). How long do you think we'll have to wait to be seen?

The wait at the Sectary of State (or DMV for others) is much much much greater than the Social Security office. Last year I procrastinated on renewing my tags by the mail so in order to make certain I would have the new ones I went to the office. I showed up almost 25 minutes before they opened and a line was already starting to form!! /boggle

Your Social Security office can't be nearly as bad as our DMV. The last time I showed up at the DMV at 7 AM, a full hour before they opened. The line was a good 200 feet long and 3 people wide by that time. I did manage to get out by 9:45 AM with my address correctly changed.

The one time I showed up in the middle of the day (around noon), I was told I might be there until well after they closed at 4 PM. I left and went back another day much earlier.

When my wife did it, there was no line. She even downloaded the form from the internet and filled it out before getting there.

With the DMV, you just need to know what you are doing. Don't go in the last week of the month, don't go in later in the afternoon, don't go in on a Friday, and don't go in just as it opens. Follow those rules (especially the last week of the month rule) and you'll have much shorter lines.

Our DMV (vehicle registration) is usually very quiet..the drivers' license place, on the other hand..they're flooded.

The DMV round here has an online appt scheduler, which works great 🙂 Walk in, go to the appt line and done 10 min later. See if you can get an appt at the SSO.

even with the appointment scheduler i have had to wait up to 2 hours at the dmv.

at social security, i showed up before it opened, chilled in the car eating a bagel, went in at 9:00am when it opened, out the door by 9:30.

I once went to the DMV for something and i was amazed on how fast i was out, more like 20 minutes. It was a thursday and it never happen again.

I never understood why the DMV line was always so long. Thank God every time I've had to go there I've made appointments 🙂 Saves a good 45 minutes.
