is the Viewsonic VP171B still the best 17" for the $$$

Im still looking to get a LCD monitor and last time I asked I was told that the Viewsonic VP171B was the best on the market for the $$$, is that still the case? Thanks

I got that model. I've heard that the the NEC, Planar and other manufactures have the same screen that supports the 16ms (16-bit colors only). So if you want a monitor with 16ms then you can look at these for your solution. Me I like my montior. The three inputs/tilt/hight adjust/thin bazel/controls are awesome. I only wish an 18-19 model existed with 16ms. Also I wanted builtin speakers and usb hub (I take it to our LAN Party).

Let us know what you come up with.

anyone recommend a better monitor for around the same $$$ between $500-600. Dont really like the Planar monitor (had probs with a 19") and I do like the NEC lcds but I thought that they were VGA only (no DVI) Thanks

 

Sony SDM X73 may interest you. I tried one out for two weeks but ended going with the VP171S.

This is incorrect...
NEC 1760V is VGA only
NEC 1760NX has DVI as well as VGA, and this is the model I use. Fantastic colors, no ghosting in games, though sometimes playing movie files requires the brightness and contrast settings to be jacked up a tad.

FWIW, I believe the Viewsonic 171B uses the same panel as the above two NEC models, as well as several other 17" LCDs (cant remember which ones.. Hitachi?). I got to see the 171B in person and IMO its only distinguishing feature is its ability to rotate the display to a vertical position. 768 x 1024 would be useful if you surf the net all day 🙂 or if you do a lot of word documents.

Not sure of price differences over there, but last I saw the 171B was more than US$100 above the NEC...

You can run setting at 32bit...It Interopilates (don't know how to spellit) from 16bit up. I own this monitor and it rocks...wish it was bigger.

Just came back from our Qtrly lan parties. The guy next to me had the new DELL XPS 20inch 16ms Monitor. The only thing I can say is it's big. I like my Viewsonic.

You can, I own it and it works wonderfully and I don't notice any color loss over my Viewsonic CRT.

The current best 17 inch LCD is the Samsung 172x. The monitor uses a 6 bit TFT Panel but uses much better dithering algorithms then any 6 bit monitors out there. The response time of the monitor is on par or better then the Hercules 920 Pro DVI and the 172x is far more ergonomic. There has been a lot of confusion about it because the retards at Samsung sent 25 ms response time engineering samples to the reviewers. For a more recent review go here:

Or if you cannot stand the thought of a 6 bit monitor then you can wait for the Samsung 193p. More expensive however it has a PVA Matrix at a full 8 bits and a response time of 20ms or so they claim. It also has an excellent contrast ratio of 800:1 with a brightness of 250 nits. PVA monitors also have far superior color reproduction and viewing angles.
