Is the Velociraptor a big leap from the previous Raptor?

I have a 74GB Raptor now as an OS + program drive. Is the Velociraptor worth upgrading to?

Only advantage Raptors/VRs give over normal drives is fast access time.

There's not much difference in access time between Rs & VRs.

So I'd deduce there's not much difference period.

The new raptors run cooler, use less power, are a bit quieter, and are a tad faster. Worth upgrading though, not IMO, not unless you find a good deal on a Velicoraptor. Sealed retails/oems are going on ebay for $140ish and $170ish..

but there is a difference in storage density

which means faster transfer rates

is it worth upgrading? well as always, it depends . . .

Is it a two platter design? If so, then I think you would benefit from the 4x platter density.

The OP has asked a very vauge question, "worth".
I'm suprised you guys haven't ask about his Raptor version (old 8MB or newer 16MB), usage or budget.
Those are three critical points to determine the vauge question of "worth".

Ok, I'll ask...
Jumpem, what 74GB Raptor version are you running now, 8MB or 16MB cache?
What main tasks are performed on the system in question?
What kind of budget do you have for storage upgrade?

BTW, In most cases, "Worth" is a very subjective determination.
To get our best advice, you should answer the questions above as well as post the main specs of your system.

The 16MB version. Main tasks are web surfing, light Office work, and gaming. No real budget, I'll either buy something or I won't. I am going to add a pair of 1TB drives to store home movies, and am pondering upgrading my OS drive at the same time.

Don't worry about it, stick with your Raptor...

Official Answer: No, it's not worth it for you to upgrade to a VelociRaptor.

I run a very quite system and I have a velociraptor 150Gb (without icepack mind you!) and I never really hear it. My Yate Loon fans at 800rpm are louder. I like it a lot, only thing is that its hard to mount as its 2.5" and not standard size.

So if you like silence and your current raptors are the loudest part of your system then I would upgrade, it has better access time, but I am not certain how often you really notice it, but transferrates you will notice.
