Is the U.S.News America's Best Graduate Schools worth buying?

I'm sure people here can give you rankings from it. I used to do it when I had access to it and I've seen others do the same thing. But yes, I found it pretty useful.

If you need that to tell you which graduate school to go to maybe you dont need to go to grad school.

Ok punnyB

Dont know what punnyB means and dont care, but I can tell you that when it cames time for me to choose a grad school for mathematics (which has a strong showing in the field I am interested in) I wont need to look in magazine.

You would want to look in a magazine for all sorts of statistics and rankings that they provide.

No I wouldnt thats stupid. I can tell you of the top of my head what colleges rank high in certain fields and If I didnt know I would ask my profs in those fields. Do you think US NEWS knows more about combinatorics or matroids or PDE's ....than the people in those fields.

If you want a quick reference, i would just have someone here look it up for you. But if you are considering applying and want to look at how competitive you are for each school etc, i would suggest just getting teh subscription. My parents had one when i was applying to college.

I don't think you would know off-hand statistics such as average test scores, average gpa, percentages of minorities and international students, percentage that get teaching assistantships, percentage that get research assistantships, # of phd students, # of masters students, size of the graduate school, # of full time to part time students, percentages that get employment by graduation, etc. Many of those statistics are important to people when applying. If it's not improtant to you, then good for you.

exactly. i don't have the best GPA out there (3.0/4.0) and I want to apply for schools that will give me a chance as applications are not free. I don't have $319394123 dollars to blow on applications. U.S.News gives average and minimum GPAs accepted in the past years, average test scores, etc.

Anyways, I'll get the subscription.

Ummmm, US News gets it's information from " the people in those fields."
Now maybe they won't have information on what schools are particularly strong in very specific areas of a discipline, but they have a lot of statistics and rankings from the professors in the field.

US news shouldn't be used as the end all to what school is the best. it is best used to look at stats - students, numbers applied, accepted, avg gpa/test scores, tuition, etc.
