Is the thermistor supposed to touch the CPU?

I ahve an Abit KR7A-RAID. I blew up my AMD AthlonXP 1600+ without ever being able to boot, which beats me since I did install a Thermalright SK-6 and fan with Arctic Alumina applied correctly.

When I got a replacement CPU, I theoried that maybe my motherboard had a shortage of some kind, and that the thermistor might have transmitted some kind of current that fried the previous CPU. So what I did was physically lower the thermistor so that it doesn't come into contact with the CPU.

Now, I am able to boot. But my temperature is always in the high 40sC without even overclocking. Does allowing some air between the thermistor and the CPU actually give a higher temperature reading? If yes, is it worth the time to readjust the thermistor and therefore go through the laborious process of reinstalling the CPU plus heatsink?
