Is the Thermalright XP 120 still king of the hill?

I ask this question because I'm seriously thinking about replacing mines. I have an A64 2800+ going at 2.47ghz with 1.6 Vcore. Cooling this chip, i have an XP 120 with a snayo denki(sp) fan giving between 80-103CFM at full blast and STILL...My temps range between 55-60C when OC'd with a full load.

This just does'nt make any sense. I need a new cooler. I've RMA this one before because of same temp issues and a susoected concave base and they send me a new one and I still get the same weird temps. Bah.

I've reinstalled it a few times. I'm using artic silver ceramique. My CPU Idles at 39C with the above configuration, which means theres almost a 20C jump in temp!

You're pumping quite a bit of voltage through that CPU, I'm not shocked that you have high temps.

but 1.6 does'nt really seem that high. With 1.525 Vcore at 2.3ghz the load temp reaches 52-54C

It's an older A64, based off the 130nm process. They do tend to run hotter. If you want to get something new, look into the 3000+ Venice. It runs cooler and has more OC headroom. :)

Dude, don't worry about it. As long as you're below 65C, temps don't matter at all, as long as you're stable. On the other hand, if you really hate those temps, I might suggest the new Scythe Ninja hsf with a good 120mm fan. Silent PC review just did an article on it and it seems to be (gasp) superior to the XP-120! Another route may be the XP-90c, although that'll make maybe 1-2 degrees of difference.

Something must be wrong. I have my 3200 NC at 2550mhz with a 1.55 vcore and its idling at ~37C, load at ~53 and its with the stock hsf. Make sure you're not putting too much AS on.

You're running basically the same CPU with a bit less voltage, and your temps reflect that. Just shows that the OP's temps are probably dead on if you take into account differences in ambient temperature and case cooling.

just looking to OC higher. I might get that new Zalman or swift tech APEX water cooling solution. hmm....

Remeber thatn in OC'ing when you reach a certain point.. you are putting alot of power in the chip and getting almost no gain in perfomrance... and it throws off alot of heat... if you are in the uppermost oc range of your particular chip.. you might have pushed it into that, more power little gain area and produceing alot more heat than you need.

 I've had great results with the new Scythe Ninja cooler. With a 120mm fan strapped to it, I dropped idle temperatures from 59 to 47 on a 3.2 gig prescott. The Ninja replaced a 7000 CU Zalman.

I haven't checked load temperatures becuase the only thng I have that loads the CPU heavily is Microsoft Flight Simulator which I run at 1280 -1024. By the time I back out of Flight Sim and get to the temperature measurement for the CPU the temperature has dropped to about 50 so I don't know how high it has been - the temperarture drops rapidly once the load is removed.

p.s. using arctic silver
nividia 6800 with zalman 700 gpu cooler
2 gigs memory
hitachi 80 gig SATA x2 in raid 0
wd 80 gig ide backup
revolution 7.1 sound card
x-clio 450 power supply
Antec p-160 case, 120mm in case intake and exhaust, 120 mm fan on bottom of ps very near the scythe ninja cooling fins.
