It's more about getting family together. But, the person hosting the gathering wants to make sure the food tastes as good as possible and that there's an abundance of food. My day is Christmas - everyone gets together at our house for the Christmas holiday. I cook enough food to feed a small army & have enough choices that everyone's more than happy (plus I send people home with leftovers.) When it's time to set out the food, we run out of room for all the food & have to set up extra tables and stands to hold it all (I do it buffet style.) I can easily feed 60-70 people on Christmas; but only have to feed about 15-20. One of the items is always beef on weck (medium rare) - I start with at least 20 pounds of roast beef. Then, there's the 10 pounds of hamburg that I turn into meatballs for meatball subs. Plus, fresh baked sliced ham & turkey. Not to mention a multitude of pies and other baked goods.
