There you go, assuming again. You guys are making a broad generalization. You can't say, "That fact doesn't count." We could ASSUME that most SUV owners are in areas where they need them.

We could also assume the sun revolves around the earth, if we go along that line of logic... At any rate, I related something I've observed, which isn't asumption.

peace to that

and i also have to complain here because i drive a tiny honda civic and the headlights on SUV's are RIGHT at my eye level, which makes for some very uncomfortable driving at night/

Looks like you are the one with the problem. You should consider buying an SUV.

im the one with the problem??! O ok so i should go out and buy a new car to accomaodate everyone else. i see.

if you are too fat to fit in a chair the solution is not to get a bigger chair. the problem is with the designers and the inconsiderate people who drive them. i have written many research papers on ths topic so i know what im talking about.

Why should SUV drivers have to buy a car to accomodate you? Perhaps you should do more research before you claim to know what you are talking about, as it is obvious that you are clueless on this subject.

STFU dont hate on me this entire thread was started about why suv's suck, and how they inconvience everybody who doesnt have one.

There's no hate here. I just thought I would point out the problems with your complaint.

Getting you frazzled was just a bonus ;)

Dude, we're going to run out of gas. Period. If not tomorrow then maybe the next day. If not me and you then maybe our kids, kids. Having mom drive a tercel isn't going to overly impact this fact. How about this, we'll drive our gas guzzlers with full knowledge we're putting a squeeze on the gas supply - while you go ahead and get yourself in your prius and show us the way. We'll all be driving a Prius sooner or later according to your line of thought so let me enjoy my gas guzzler until then. Aren't you yourself being selfish for making me drive the car I don't want to, just to do YOU a favor?

You can't really think like that can you? That is the same thing as saying that if we had a finite supply of food left on the planet, you would think it is just fine to eat twice what other people do? Just because you can afford to? Now it is a bit different seeing as a large percentage of the people are "eating twice as much." But the reasoning is sound. Why not conserve? Why use all you can?

One argument I hardly ever see about the whole finite supply of oil issue is supply and demand. If most people got more efficient vehicles (hybrid or more efficient engine - doesn't matter) gas prices as well as inflation in general would go down. (well in a perfect world...this isn't taking into account money grubbing oil companies)

I have no problem with people driving large vehicles. My beef is with the ineffiency of todays large vehicles. And I'm not some eco freak. I'm concerned for a purely selfish reason. I hate spending more on gas!!!

edit: I'd just like to add that I believe people should be able to buy whatever they want/can afford. Unless it affects others. And IMO large amounts of people with inefficient vehicles does affect everyone else.

When they can't see the cars around them and can't drive a large vehicle and can't park for sh!t, then it *IS* of concern to me.

Hell, I get SUV soccer moms and teenagers who don't notice me driving my VW Bus and change lanes into me causing me to slam on my brakes or swerve out of the way. How the hell can you miss the Great White Bus??!!?!?!?!

I'd say a good 60% of the vehicles in my office building's parking structure are midsize or larger SUVs, yet they all seem to think they can park in the compact spaces. Or that they're so special that they can park straddling the line between 2 spaces.

It's the pisspoor driving skills these people display that pisses me off. When they were driving small cars, it was much less noticable and much less scary. :Q

nice looking bus, we have an '88 vanagon with an '01 golf engine in it. nice to see others taking good care of these awesome vehicles.

are you kidding me???!!
trying to figure out where everything is under the hood of an SUV is like trying to understand women!

i could name everything under the hood of my civic and where it is, AND i could see it and get at it with out having to take anything apart!
Yep, you'll have to pull your engine apart at about 70K to replace the timing belt, which is not on the SUV at all, because it uses a timing chain instead. The SUV also has the tranny easily accessible NOT under the hood with the engine. It also uses cheap, easy to replace U-joints instead of hard to replace and expensive CV joints. Yours uses expensive McPherson struts instead of cheap shock absorbers...

You did a lot of research, eh?

NO,NO, NO. It is not over. Oh, and just because you are whining(and because I can), I will be sure to take the long way to the grocery store, and when I get there, I will double park my suburban just for you!

well then i will come to your court session and laugh when you have to pay the fine and get 4 points on you liscense JUST FOR YOU!

i think that constitutes Hondas being pwned. however, i'm digressing. whoever said they're going to buy a mini-van i suggest otherwise. they drive like crap, and it's in the teens to get up to 60, which in most states, is the optimal speed for highway driving (unless you have crazy drivers, in which you'll need to get 0-60 times under 8.) SUVs as an image is also a reason in some respect. there's also the aspect of safety, feigned or not. being higher up gives more security to those drivers who feel overpowered by the other bigger cars - i for one like being higher up, and lower on the ground, depending on the situation. city driving with an SUV is a lot harder than just taking a 2 door, but when it comes to inclement weather, it's much better to leave the coupe in the driveway, and just drive over the snowbank that the snowplow conveniently leaves infront of your driveway.

in closing, those who hate SUVs can't bash it till you drive an actual good SUV - being LandRover, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, VW - those handle more like sedans, and less like tubs of rock.

Umm..I don't use my SUV for off-roading. I use it for hauling a lot of people / gear, driving in unsafe winter conditions, hauling a boat, carrying lumber, etc. Never once have I gone offroading, but I couldn't do what I do with an '85 Audi.

Go here: http://www.autoalliance.org/archives/suvusagestudy.pdf to see about SUV usage. LEt's see..

79.3 % of all owners indicate that they use their SUV during harsh weather.
50% use it to haul tools or other bulky items (although your car hauls a tool whenever YOU drive it)
40% use it to access homes or locations
40% use it to take children to various activites
24% use them to carry bikes, kayaks, canoes or skies and also take advantage of the towing ability.
15% use them to go offroading.
4.6% reported that they frequently transport handicapped in their vehicles.

Do you have any idea how many SUV's I've jumped in harsh weather? Everytime it gets cold they don't start. Last night it was almost -40f and my car started as well as it starts in 70f weather.

and shown in another way:
20.7% of all owners indicate that they do not use their SUV during harsh weather.
50% do not use it to haul tools or other bulky items (although your car hauls a tool whenever YOU drive it)
60% do not use it to access homes or locations
60% do not use it to take children to various activites
76% do not use them to carry bikes, kayaks, canoes or skies and also take advantage of the towing ability.
85% do not use them to go offroading.
95.4% do not reported that they frequently transport handicapped in their vehicles.
Seeing as cars typically perform as well if not better in poor weather, and carry tools just as well (well except big stuff, carry children just as well, and in my expirience can "access homes or locations" as well as the typical SUV (assuming that you don't have to offroad to get there), 76% do not need SUV's for any legitimate purpose.

You ingrates do know that the F-Series is still the best selling vehicle in America followed by the Silverado/Sierra twins...RIGHT??

I don't see you little whiners bitching about the plethora of extended cab, crew cab, long-bed, duallie, etc, etc. trucks out there on the road that are longer just as wide and have turning circles far worse even the biggest SUV's. Hell, my dad's "compact" Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed is harder to drive, harder to see out of, harder to park, and harder to navigate with than his Toyota Highlander Limited.

I bitch about these too.

It's a known fact that more and more pickups are now being used for the same purposes as cars and SUVs...personal transportation instead of real work. Now I'm not saying that they aren't being used for work at all, but a big portion of the half-ton trucks are being used for personal commuter vehicles while the HD trucks are seeing the bulk of the heavy lifting.

Huge pickups are extremely popular with the urban crowd were i live.
