Is the SUV Age about over?

Does anyone else think that the end of the large SUV's are about over? I know that they have to be the most un-practicle vehicles made as far as fuel efficiency and just around town driving yet it seems that every soccer mom has a Suburban or Expidition trying to find a place to park at the grocery store.

Why do you care so much? So people want large cars - it's their money, STFU already. How they spend THEIR money is of no concern to you.

As oil prices are about to start going up as production is hitting it's peak, it will be fashionable to have a small car. Remeber the Fiero? Small cheap POS cars can be popular ;)

SUVs will still be around, but in smaller numbers.

SUVs will only survivie if alternative (RENEWABLE) energy takes a firm foothold. Windmills, solar power, etc.

When they can't see the cars around them and can't drive a large vehicle and can't park for sh!t, then it *IS* of concern to me.

Hell, I get SUV soccer moms and teenagers who don't notice me driving my VW Bus and change lanes into me causing me to slam on my brakes or swerve out of the way. How the hell can you miss the Great White Bus??!!?!?!?!

I'd say a good 60% of the vehicles in my office building's parking structure are midsize or larger SUVs, yet they all seem to think they can park in the compact spaces. Or that they're so special that they can park straddling the line between 2 spaces.

It's the pisspoor driving skills these people display that pisses me off. When they were driving small cars, it was much less noticable and much less scary. :Q

On a serious note, what do you guys class as an SUV? We don't really have anything over here in the UK that's specifically called an SUV- is it a bit like a 4x4 crossed with a hatchback or something?

Your gripes are meaningless. The only thing that will reduce their numbers is economics. PERIOD. And I have yet to have any of the things you mentioned happen to me with the exception of people that own them sometimes can't park them worth a crap. But seeing how I can walk, I really don't care.

SUV = anything the size of a full sized truck, but not a truck. Like a Chevy Suburban or GMC Yukon. The Land Rover would be an SUV.

Ah, I see, thanks :)
Over here they're usually called the "4x4 brigade" - mothers taking their "little darlings" to school. In fact, that's usually the best place to spot a new type of 4x4 - where it's always dry and tarmacced. (sp?)

I'm glad that my car doesn't count as an SUV, I'd never live it down on here ;)

I don't mind an SUV if you own it for a reason. I just hate it when people buy them for 'show'.

I'm sure you're one of those idiots who supports suing Tobacco companies too, because we all know they're at fault.

Link to the car I drive (company car). The reason we have them is that when we're doing installations, we have to take up to three PCs, CRTs, keyboards, mice, printers, scanners, speakers etc. We need the space to do our jobs ;)

(Just a shame it's so damned unreliable :| - six months old and it's been in the shop for three of those)

Actually that is a horrible analogy. Second-hand smoking would be a much better one.

No way. SUVs are here to stay. The question is, what other conveniences are they going to cram into them.

NO,NO, NO. It is not over. Oh, and just because you are whining(and because I can), I will be sure to take the long way to the grocery store, and when I get there, I will double park my suburban just for you!

I still drive a Jeep Cherokee, but it's practical here (1 ft of snow) and gets 14-18 MPG. Those small penised Hummer drivers make me sick- such an obnoxious vehicle. I sure hope it's over.

Anything over mid-size should not be classified an SUV in my opinion. Sorry but anything bigger is anything but "sporty". They should have a monstrosity category.

I think the demand for large cars of all types is elastic. The price of gas has a negative influence on the purchase of cars that have low mpg performance.

Why? If you think a vehicle is a nice, good-looking machine, and you can afford it, why shouldn't you buy it if you want it?

People who bitch about the "soccer moms" driving SUV's simply aren't looking at the facts. They are not the main ones driving SUV's, they mostly have minivans.

The ones who are not good drivers would still be bad drivers if they had a Camry. And they'd still run you off the road.

And what blind spot are you talking about in SUV's like the Suburban? (I saw it mentioned above)
They have more glass down the side than a damn bus, and there are virtually no blind spots to speak of.
If someone doesn't look before they switch lanes, it doesn't matter what they are driving.
There are more asswipes in small cars that zip in and out of traffic that endanger others than "soccer moms" who "can't drive" SUV's.

An SUV is great for hauling kids around in. Irrelevant whether it's a 4wd or 2wd. You just can't beat it. You can talk to me all day about how some smaller cars/vans have nearly as much space and all that crap, but it isn't the same. Sure, you can pack all your stuff that you take on vacation into a minivan instead of a Suburban, but it will be just that: packed in. If you want to stop at any point and access some of that stuff, you'll have to take it all out to do so.
SUV's are all about style, convenience, and room. If someone never takes it offroad, so what? It's their money.
If you can't afford an SUV, or afford to feed one, just STFU, you're just jealous.
