Is the speed of the compact flash card important when taking digital pictures?

I'm planning on getting a Canon S400 and a 512MB CF card. However, I saw Lexar's 512MB 40X CF card. Is there a big difference in the speed of CF when taking pictures? I want quick response when I take my pictures, and if it the CF that is holding the camera back, I'd like to get the fastest CF memory. Any recommendations on CF for digital cameras?

don't let them lie. nothing noticable. it MIGHT make a difference when you are using a card reader with USB2.0 or something. But in my experience the claims are not very noticable.

the picture is stored in a temporary cache as the image is written to the CF.

doh, that's not what you're asking. well, listen to Sid.

I'd get the fastest you can buy. Check out the Transcend CF cards. NewEgg has a 45X 512MB CF card for about $123.

I've been using one of these in a DRebel and it works great.

Ok, $123 is not bad at all for 512MB of fast memory. The one at Amazon was like $170 and that is getting a little steep. Like I said, I'm buying a Canon S400 and this should go nicely with it.

Thanks everyone for your insight.

Your camera has to support the faster speeds ( I think they call it WA or 'write-accelerated' enabled). If it doesn't, it will just function at th elower speeds. But IMO, I'll just get the faster memory if the price difference isn't that great.
