Is the South that bad?

I grew up in California, and relocated to Georgia when I joined the Army. I lived in GA, SC and NC over a period of 12 years. I've lived in the Midwest now for 7 years.

To be honest, I loved it. Sure, it was a massive culture shock at first, but once my bias was gone I realized that of all the places I've lived, the South was the most pleasant, and surprisingly, the least racist and most integrated.
