Much better, I've heard nothing but bad things about that creative drive. But the best cdroms are toshiba.

I had a Creative 32x...died, got replaced with a 36x which also died.
I took the 36x back and they had to send it away because they had no creative's in stock or something....
Well I didn't want to wait 3-6 weeks or whatever for the return...so I bought a new 48x Creative (at a different store)...that was dumb... My 48x creative also died and was replaced by a 52x...
By this time my 36x had come back to me, and was a new 48x

So now I have a 48x and 52x creative. I put the 52x in my system and gave the 48x to a friend. Both are dead now I had the 52x replaced again and my roommate has the new 52x....(I moved away for a co-op term)..

That's a 32x, 36x, 2 48xs and a 52x. All in the space of about 18 months.

Don't touch creative drives.

Edit: can't comment on Sony, never used their CDROMs but I would imagine their's is probably fairly high quality.

Well, all I can say is that I haven't really had a reliability problem with the Sony 48x, though I've only been using it for about three weeks. It hasn't had problems with any moderately scratched CDs yet. It does get kinda loud spinning up, though.

yes, its much better, the creative 52x is a pos. not only are they unreliable, but when they work, they sound like a 747 taking off

Don't get the Creative 52x. All I have heard from friends and here on Anandtech are people having problems with the Creative.

Sony has always made good CDROMS. I have a 32X Sony that works as good as the day I bought it over 2 years ago now. The only thing bad about it is Ripping Audio [DAE] for making MP3's. It's not that slow but if the Audio CD has any problems at all there is clickin in the Wave/MP3's but then again it's an old drive now. I am sure the 48X Sony would be better at DAE.

I personally love my Teac 540e. Fast both reading and doing DAE and very reliable with scratched or damaged Audio CD's.

Toshiba makes some first rate CDROM Drives also as does Plextor. Plextor is the most expensive of them all but it an outstanding drive but I have found that my Teac keeps up with the Plextor in DAE. Amazing for the $50 I spent on it!

Oh, almost forgot, the Asus 50x is a very good CDROM drive.

Toshiba's have been junk in my experiences. Most Creative drives are terrible but it depends on who made the drive (Creative does not make CD-ROMs). Sony drives are pretty good. Panasonic, Hitachi, and Plextor drives are the best from my experiences.

Nobody I talk to likes Creative anything...and after reading some of this tonight, I see why my friends are so down on them.
