Is the socket Thermistor supposed to touch the ceramic?

Or is it just supposed to measure the air temp inside of the socket. I ask this because I just removed my volcano 2 and installed a swiftech mc370 with a delta38 fan and my temps went from reading 54c with the volcano and thermal pad to 68c with the swiftech and arctic silver2. I noticed that the thermistor is usually down low enough in the socket when you take it out of the box that it wouldn't usually come into physical contact with the cpu ceramic. i always assumed that you should bend it up a bit to get it touching the cpu. I have lapped the heatsink with 1500 grit sand paper til it is smoothe as a baby's backsice and cleaned and reapplied the thermal compound several different times and the temps still are high any ideas?

Well I just cleaned all that thermal material off the volcano and mounted the delta on it. put it back on the chip with the arctic silver and now this setup is reporting 43c idle and 50c load with rc5 so the delta and the arctic silver got me about 4c drop in temps The chip is currently clocked at 1400 On to 1470 we go. I suspect that the springs on the swiftech are to weak. It just didn't seem nearly tight enough Maybe that would explain the really poor showing i got from it.

Well It looks as if i have been had. That wasn't a genuine swiftech looks like some kind of knockoff of the mc370. I have seen it show up one other place as well looks identical to the mc370 same mounting clip arrangement which by the way was very easy to use but doesn't cool worth a crap. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bunta for suckering me into that piece of junk. By the way Bunta you wouldn't happen to work for KDcomputers would you?

No I do not work for KD computers!

Yes, it is a swiftech knock-off, I don't believe I ever said otherwise, and I certainly didn't tell you that KD computers sold the MC370.

I am using their "knock-off" with a 27cfm sunon fan and my temps run about 35C idle and 48C under stress with a 1.333 oc to 1530. These may not be the best temps possible with air cooling, but they certainly are't terrible. Plus my system is completely stable.

If you are unhappy with your purchase, don't blame me!

Finally, I have dealt with KD computers several times and have found them to be extremely reasonable and fair. Give them a call if you are not satisfied. I am sure they would refund your money.

Nope you absolutely right you didn't make any of those claims and i never said you did. but on the other hand you have made some claims of excellent cooling performance. which I am finding it impossible to duplicate with the supposedly identical heatsink.

<< I just bought this and it works great on my 1.333 tbird oc'd to 1500! I saw a Swifteck 370 at the computer show last weekend and my heatsink looks almost identical, but the Swifteck was $45. I got the Sunon rather than the Delta fan and the noise is not bad at all. My temps range from 80-85F idle and 108-112F after a half hour of Q3. It's only 36 bucks with the Sunon fan. I previously had shelled out $65 for a Blizzard Thunderbird copper heatsink which didn't cool worth crap compared to this cooler. >>

My temps with a delta black label at 1400 voltage of 1.73 54c idle 64c load

Just got off the phone with Dave at kdcomputers and he wants me to send it back to him so he can replace it. he said he is very curious about why it isn't performing and apparently wants to test it. Maybe i just got a bad one

I can understand your frustration since I had the same problem with the blizzard copper hsf, which i eventually returned. If fact, I would expect lower temps with your setup since you were using the black delta while I am only using the sunon fan.

Maybe my mobo temp readings are incorrect, I dunno:(. But it was never my intention to mislead you or anyone else about this hsf.

My current temps are higher than those I quoted the other day because I am at 1530(11.5x133) instead of 1500(10x150). The larger multiplier apparently really increases the heat output of the cpu. I had my first random crash to the windows desktop this afternoon while playing giants, so I backed off to 1466 (11x133) but my temps remained about the same as in the above post.

No matter what the outcome, I am sure Dave will do right by you. I mean at the very worst you'll get your money back and get a genuine Swiftech;)
