Just wonderin' since I'm getting one for a T-bird 1GHz. Also, is thermal compound like goop fine or is a thermal pad absolutely required? Thanks.

The HSF you mention should work fine, although very much the same critter is available from 2cooltek for $5 less. Tough to go wrong with either vendor.

Few on this forum would recommend a thermal pad. Thermal paste is pretty much standard, with arctic silver apparently the best available. Try the stuff the vendor supplies first, switch if you need to...

Thanks for the responses. Is the one you said that's cheaper from 2cooltek the Vantec one? I just read the info on it at 2cooltek and it said it might not work well enough for the 1GHz. Is it true? If it is, do you know if the one from 3dfxcool would work then? Thanks.

I went back to 2cooltek and didn't get that impression at all...Just that he was using it on a Duron at 800Mhz and that it worked great...

Obviously, the heatsink is the same for both. The 3Dfx unit has a 22 cfm fan and the 2cooltek has a 23 cfm fan. Basically, no difference. If you feel more comfortable with 3Dfx, Go with it.

Your concerns are justified. If the whole thing kinda freezes you in your tracks, then follow this link to an AMD 1-Gig T-Bird approved unit for an even better price...

Probably on a par with either the 3dfx or the 2cooltek, maybe not quite as good. Need to provide your own thermal compound.
