Is The Sims 3 a fun game?

Looking for something to tidy me over during the next year while I wait for Skyrim. Just watched some Sims 3 videos on Youtube and those are real funny. Love the gibberish language and exaggerated gestures and emotions. The game looks like a lot of fun. How steep is the learning curve for someone who hasn't played 1 & 2? My understanding is you don't have to micromanage everything but you can just let your Sim be and watch her/his life unfold like a movie, right? 🙂

I find the Sims games pretty fun. They are huge time drains though, I can usually expect to waste a whole day if I start playing.

I usually only play with 1 guy though, so the game is super easy. If you want to play with more sims and you want them all to be successful it's going to take more work. My last character reached the top of most career paths, and when I finally got the house to where I liked it, I stopped playing because there was nothing more for me to do. If you turn on aging, you would be playing with new characters a lot so I don't imagine that would happen.

But ya there really is no learning curve. You could probably just sit back and watch them do their thing, but don't expect them to get promoted or anything.

Cool. I have tons of time to kill. This game isn't like an MMO, right? You can play it by yourself and not have to interact with other people's sims online?

It's a massive hassle imho. I have the Sims 3 (no add-ons/etc), and for me the novelty wore off pretty quickly. It's supremely irritating to have to deal with your sim constantly needing to use the bathroom, take showers, eat, sleep, etc. In order for your sim to get better at stuff (guitar/working out/etc), you have to invest a lot of time in those activities to achieve levels in those categories, but you're constantly interrupted by necessities.

Also, aging blows. You get a character that's getting pretty decent, and then all of a sudden he's old and dead.

How this series is popular is beyond my comprehension. Real life is a hassle enough without simulating all of the things about it that aren't that fun (but are necessary of course).

This has always been my impression of the whole series. It's too difficult to do things you want your character to do when it takes two hours to take a dump and four hours to make dinner and clean up the dishes. Take the time to do anything other than basic necessities and your sim will starve to death or soil themselves.

It's pretty fun. Like SimCity, you'll play it, it will be cool, you'll get to some point and lose interest, time will pass, you'll get the urge to play it again, you'll play it, it will be cool, you'll get to some point and lose interest....

Probably the most fun part is designing/creating houses. It gets old for me after a day or so, but I'll revisit the game every few months.

This. It's fun to pick up for a few hours every couple months but it doesn't take long to get old again.

If you like to repeat the most tedious aspects of life over and over again in a virtual world, then this game is for you.

I thought it was great fun for a while. The expansion packs seems really stupid to me, but I had a lot of fun playing vanilla. They did a nice job bringing the game up to date.
