Is the Same key used for 64bit vista as 32bit vista?

I'm almost positive, yeah.

The retail Ultimate come with both DVDs already but only one product key.

I believe you have to have MS ship you the 64 DVD if you buy any other version. They might have a download available too.

Looks like you can only have the option to send them you a dvd. Too bad you can't download if even though you purchased 32bit retail.

I dont have my new product key available, but can you go from 32bit Home Basic to 64bit Home Premium through this, or are there limitations to what upgrades you can do?

I just got a 32bit Home Basic for $50 at CompUSA today, and was wanting to know what options I have incase I want to move up in the future.

EDIT - on MS's site it looks like it costs $79 to go from Basic to Premium... and I dont see anything in premium that would make me want to spend more money (more games, home theater stuff and 3d mouse icon??) Guess they only thing I may be interested in at some point is 64 bit.

Thanks!

What I don't understand is, you can BUY AND DOWNLOAD vista from microsoft...... but you can not download 64bit version even if you bought 32bit version. They can only mail it to you. What an eye sore

The primary difference between Home Basic and Home Premium is Aero.

You might scroll down this page to the Digital media features chart, in case there's anything there that you might need. Anyway, nice buy on the Home Basic 🙂

Thanks Aluvus, from what it looks like I wont miss not having that too much. I mean it looks neat, but if given the choice to spend $20 to get it, Id have to decline.

(Only the Home Basic retail packs were 50% off, the OEM and Premium were still just 40% off at the compUSA I went to).

I have a question?

If i have a 32-bit cd for serial A and have a 64-bit CD for serial B is it allowed to switch the two cds and use the same serial used on said A and B computer? I have not tried it i was just wondering?

if you mean as in serial a was 32-bit retail, can you use a 64-bit cd? if you haven't already used it to install the 32-bit OS on a pc, and its the same kind (retail vs oem), i would guess yes.

If my friend has the Ultimate 64bit DVD, but I am running Home Premium.....Can I still install off the Ultimate 64bit DVD? Or does it have to be a Home Premium 64bit dvd?

The discs actually contain everything for all the versions, so one would expect that you could, yes. However, it would be the 64-bit version. Also, if the disc is retail and your license is OEM, I have no idea if it will work.

The DVD contains ALL Vista versions. The install discriminator is the key ID. It identifies what you paid for and will only let you activate that version.

There are two DVD's available - 32 bit (X86) and 64 bit. Each works the same way.

Thanks. Is there a hardware advisor on the 64bit dvd, that will make sure prior to upgrading your hardware is compatible? (I know 32bit had this).

Well I used my friends Ultimate 64bit dvd. Installed vista. It never asked for my retail 32 product key, and now I am finding out its an OEM version, and I got stuck installing Ultimate when I need Home Premium 64bit. Did I miss something on the install? Or can I not use an OEM version?

The OEM Version didn't ask for a key when you installed it, then it must be a SLIC version that looks at the SLIC Table in the BIOS when installed. Is it from one of the major Mfg's? Dell, HP, etc... Say if this is a Dell OEM DVD and your machine is also a Dell and your BIOS has the proper branding code in the SLIC Table it will be preactivated and not ask for a key or to be activated with MS. ( Note the key for the installation is in the PID.TXT file on the DVD under the SOURCES folder ). So you both must have the same brand of computer.

Note this doesn't work on some of the older versions of say a Dell/HP/IBM/etc... BIOS as the older BIOS may or may not have the SLIC table.
