is the regular 6800 going obsolete?

I wouldn't say the card is going obsolete, but I would say that we are probably in the same boat as the 6600GT guys. As long as you keep it under 1280x1024 for games today, and don't expect to run AA on the next generation of games, I'm sure the 6800 will remain a fine card.

Do I wish I had a GT, sure. But when I bought mine the price difference just wasn't worth it for me.

The 6800NU is still a good card. It's still not top-of-the-line, but it'll out-perform non-SLI 6600series, X600, X700 and all last generation cards. It's the cheapest 256bit AGP card on the market. And nothing beats it's overclocking and modding potential, save the X800pro. Try the Asus 9999GT 128MB AGP bios off MVKTech. $250 is just about right for a 6800NU. Have you tried the soft mod? You may get lucky and unlock all 16 pipes without artifacts. The X850 is just a mid-generation upgrade, and isn't worth it.

its a high end card this generation. it wont be obsolete untill the next generation of videocards, which will effectively make any exsisting card obsolete.

Sort of...

It is still a high end card, relatively speaking - you wouldn't know it by looking at these forums, but relatively few computer users and even gamers have new expensive cards like the 6800 or X800 series.

The next-gen video cards which will hopefully be here in not too long won't necessarily make the 6800 'obsolete', but they certainly will overtake them by quite a bit. In any case, it still won't be obsolete really - as a previous poster said, as long as you're realistic about your expectations (i.e. don't expect to run games at 1600x1200 and/or with AA), you should be able to play all current and probably most next-gen games just fine. Hell, an "old" 9700 Pro would still be sufficient today, as long as you didn't want to run really high resolutions and AA. (Of course, I personally do want to do these things, so I pay for it accordingly. 😛)

At this point, I don't think anything newer than, say, a Geforce4 is "obsolete" yet. Of course you won't get the full experience with newer games, but you can still run them if you so desire.

I would consider obsolete as being "useless". Hell the 9700pro is still a decent budget gaming card for some. Depends also what you do with your rig. If you are not a gamer or just surfer and mail reader onboard graphics will hold you over.

It all depends on what you mean by "obsolete"...sure the new cards may be 2x as fast, but it all depends on whether any games will need it right now or not. If you like to play at high resolutions and use AA (and other high settings) like I do, then you could say that your card would become "obsolete" if it chugs along at 20fps at 1600x1200 although someone else may be fine with that same card. It's all preferences.

$250 is a pretty good price for a regular 6800, I got my GT for $337. You'll have to ask someone else about the soft modding thing, I've never looked into it myself (since I don't need to 😛)

If it's AGP and you bought it a while ago, then that was a pretty good price for a good card. It that's a recent PCIe purchase, you would've been better off spending $50-70 less on a similar speed 6600GT or ~$50 more on a much faster and 256MB X800XL.

I think he has an AGP 6800nu. It looks like a 478 P4 on his sig. And isn't PCI-E only for 775 P4s (I only do AMD)? Anyway, eVGA doesn't make a 6800nu 128MB PCI-E.

...so yes, it was a good purchase.
