is the RC5 project dead?

I was just looking at some stats of the active users for RC5 today and it was only a few thousand, far less than it used to be back when RC5-64 was still active. I also realize that the current 72bit project will take forever, literally! Does anyone here run RC5 anymore? As far as I know it was the first widely popular distributed computing software, right up there with SETI when it first started.

Given the current trend of distributed computing projects what does the RC5 project accomplish? F@H and SETI at least seem to have some use once they are completed. What will the current RC5-72 project accomplish? Other than maybe proving that we can exhaust more keyspace?

I've got one remote machine running mainly because it is still the best behaved DC client around. Set it and forget it 🙂

This is exactly why thats the only machine on it.

I could also see RC5-72 being useful for old systems. For instance, I have an old ppro 180 laying around that is too slow to complete a lot of F@H projects within the deadline. However, it can crunch rc5 and still turn in work units without going beyond the deadline. Other than that I don't see how RC5-72 is useful to the community anymore.....maybe someone else out there knows why the project is still going on?

After the "McNutt" episode, and how willing he was to help hang David McOwen out to dry -- I suspect there are alot of folks that wouldn't run anything from them if they PAID for it! :frown: :|

I know I wouldn't.

Besides... DPAD is ALOT cooler - and Stephen Brooks is a GREAT guy. There's no comparison IMHO. (your mileage may vary)

Avoid the Politics & News forum then Dan; most of the forum also wants to hang him.😛

I run the dnet client because I've found it to be the best behaved. I'm sure many other clients are very stable now, but in my experience dnet doesn't bother ANYTHING.

Of course, I've switched to Seti for a while until it's done, but I'll probably go back to dnet later.

OMG - it's a ViRGE sighting!!! :Q
How're you doing there young fella? 😉

As to the client -- This one (DPAD) is so much better than old "what's-his-nugglets" was - it isn't even funny.
It's easier to set up than SETI, and the stats are so close to real-time that it really makes for some fun!

and We've got room for a lot of new members in DPAD!!!

We love a chalange...so anybody wants to be part of the nr.1 (soon) DPAD TeAm in the world!!!

Because It's all I was given permission to run on the 10 computers at work. Plus it's the best behaived client out there. I also run it on all my AMD based machines at home because they kick the crap out of the Intel based machines.

I'm still running this on some machines at work... I don't have access to these machines any more so they will continue crunching RC5 and OGR till they died... 😉

Actually - it WAS. DPAD 433a would be occupying that coveted designation now. 😉

Oh, admit it, you just hate dnet 🙂

Anyhow, since I've switched to Seti the last week, I miss dnet. Seti seems to be grumpy at times.
