Is the PS3 region free for DVD movies?

So I'm set on getting the MGS bundle when its out.. right now I play my DVDs through an Oppo upconverting DVD player which lets me pretty much toss anything I want at it. I've heard the PS3 is great at upconverting as well, and if the PS3 can play DVDs from other regions.. I could get rid of the Oppo. Anyone know?

Pretty sure it's only region free for games. And you shouldn't toss your DVDs, you could damage them.

Just to be clear it's region free for PS3 games, not PS2 or PS1 games. DVDs are region locked as far as I have read. Blu-rays have regions but most at this time do not have restrictions.

i think its not region free for anything, its only that the regions for blu-rays are huge and include parts of asia and america under the same region. hence, us and japan ps3 games can be played on a us ps3 and japanese ps3 because they are the same bluray region. ps2, ps1 and dvds are all still subject to their respective region schemes.

Although Blu-ray regions conveniently group Asia and America together, it appears that the PS3 games themselves are indeed region free. Link

youre right games themselves are region free, i think the bluray movies still have regions though. i wonder if theyll ever start region coding the games?

Just a note, region free games does not guarantee that NTSC games will play in PAL resolutions and vice versa.

I think it will do ntsc/pal correctly only if you use HDMI connection.

If you're using an HDMI connection, it wouldn't matter anyway since you're talking about HD resolutions.

Boo. I guess I'll have to keep the DVD player around. Might be a good time to buy a new receiver, as my current one only has 1 HDMI in.. or I could buy a HDMI switch. The options!

Thanks for the replies! 🙂

I never understood the region problem, I don't own any DVDs outside of my region 😕 I guess it would be a problem if I were a big fan of Bollywood...

Monoprice has some fairly good HDMI switches for relatively cheap. Buying a new receiver just for more HDMI inputs seems like overkill.
