Is the price difference worth it for DDRII?

Newegg has this card for $167.20, looks like a card thats a good fit for me, however this other card is essentially the same card but with DDRII for $199.00 I've done plenty of googling and haven't really found any good "sells" as to it being worth $31.80 more performance wise, but would be more interested in doing a mod to upgrade it into an XT equivalent then that'd be worth the $31.80.

What do you experts think?

if your gonna drop 199 on that 9800, forget it and do what everyone else is saying.....6600gt is the way to go for that price range

Edit: tbh i never even knew they did a 9800 with DDRII, id class that as a typo of some sort, i wouldnt have 100% faith in that description sorry

They did, 256mb ones had DDRII, but I thought all of theme (256mb versions) had.

I must agree that the 6600GT is the way to go here.

I agree as well. It will give better performance, and it supports SM3.0, HDR, etc. That is going to start being worthwhile in games very soon, and you'll be glad you have it.

As far as the DDR2 9800P, I do think that the card will mod to a 9800XT, if you have an R360 chip. If not, then well, you're SOL. I don't know if it does, so you'd have to wait and see. However, I'd get the 6600GT rather than take the "chance" with a 9800Pro mod.

However, the choice is up to you. However, the 6600GT seems to be the popular choice here 😉 .
 
Unless you absolutely refuse to buy an Nvidia card, the 6600GT is the better choice at that price point.
 
So everyone here is saying that a 128mb 128bit 6600gt is beter than a 256mb 256bit 9800?

Does anyone have any links on a good deal for a 256mb 6600gt if they exist?

They do not exist.

Memory numbers aren't everything. The extra shader logic and extra ~1000 mpixels per second of the 6600GT appears to easily make up for the memory deficiencies when compared with the 9800 Pro, even in HL2, which traditionally favors ATI cards:

If your sole concern here is to have 256MB memory on a graphics card, you need to know the do's and dont's of graphics card purchasing.

Most benches I have seen comparing a 6600GT AGP with a 9800 anything (np, pro, XT) shows the 6600GT ahead and very often by a good margin. Ask yourself, would you rather have 256MB of 256bit 700MHz DDR? Or 128MB of 128 bit 1000MHz GDDR3?
Both the 9800 and the 6600 have 8 pipline cores. I don't know what the 9800 core is clocked at, but the 6600GT chimes in at 500MHz.

6600GT. Your best bet.

380 for 9800 Pro
412 for XT

The 6800 core also has better overall shader performance, which is not necessarily indicated by pipelines/clock.

phuck, I don't know wtf the difference is between the 20billion models of the GT that the Egg carries.

🙁 this is gonna be a hard one to figure out.

Anyone have a specific one to go with for any reason?
 
You need an AGP one, right?

EDIT: The Leadtek for $187 or the EVGA for $189 are good cheap options. I've read some nasty stuff about XFX.

I think there are a few threads here about what brand of 6600gt to pick already too.

I haven't seen any other 6600 GT's with dual DVI either, damn.

 
Yeah, I looked before for someone else and it seemed like XFX was the only one making dual DVI ones that I could find.

Please do not compare those cards based on this logic. There are huge architectural differences between the two cores that make this comparison (core clocks) unvalid. But the GT is of course the card to get based on benchmarks that everybody has seen.
