Perfectly normal for that drive. It does tend to be quite a bit louder than previous Plextor CDRW's.

Well, not trying to make you paranoid, but my Plextor 16x is incredibly quiet. I wouldn't know it was on if not for the light.

Still, unless you're getting loud grinding/knocking sounds, I doubt it's a problem. If the drive were spinning discs incorrectly, you'd have lots of read/write errors.

I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed with this drive because I read so many people saying that it's a quiet drive. Mine is not quiet. The fan turns on every once in a while and it's noisy fan. I can actually hear the fan over the noise of my PS fan. I've been wanting to replace this PS because it's so noisy, but now I have another souce of noise.
I don't hear any duh duh duh while burning, but then this sound would have to be quite loud to be heard over the sound of the fan.

<<there is no fan.>>

If there is no fan, I'd like to know what this thing on the back, left side of the drive is.

I pulled the drive out and I noticed that there is this "opening" on the case fan--you can see that on the picture, left side of the fan. Is this normal, or the case of the fan cracked as they were mounting it? This might be the reason why my fan is so noisy.
