In the setup it has an option for 16:9 TV's, was wondering if this was for use with Progressive Scan?

There was a rumor back during the pre-release hype that is was, but I haven't heard anything more other than Monster Cable was supposedly coming out with progressive scan A/V cable for the PS2 (much like their S-video and component A/V offerings).

Anyone else know the scoop?

The 16:9 feature is for use with widescreen TV's, or TV's that can correctly display anamorphic content (Wegas, for example).

No. Progressive scan is the opposite of interlaced. Anamorphic is explained well here, but basically it provides 1/3 extra resolution by putting the video on the disc out of proportion, & then squeezing it vertically to put it back into proportion.

Most TV programs, VCR tapes, laserdiscs etc that you watch are interlaced. What this means is that lines 1 3 5 7 9, etc etc are drawn, then it goes back and draws 2 4 6 8 10 etc until each frame is complete. It does it obviously so fast that you can't tell, but what a progressive scan DVD player does is draws each line one after another, so it goes in order, 1 2 3 4 5 6 etc until it's finished. I've heard it is a noticeable improvement on cartoons/movies which have animation such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit as the cartoons movement is much more fluid. The actual improvement will depend on how sensitive to these things that you are, but not only do you have to require a player which supports progressive scan (the PS2 is far from being able to support it and never will be able to, simple cables do not change the player to progressive) and also your TV has to have progressive INPUTS to display a progressive signal. So a couple things are required before you can actually watch DVDs this way.

My tv supports progressive and I planned on buying a new DVD player but I was hoping to put it off for a bit

No it's not progressive, and it is doubtful they can add the feature. Xbox will be progressive scan. btw screen shape has nothing to do with progressive scan, nor is progressive scan HDTV (just in case someone was wondering), as the primary format used in HDTV, is actually interlaced. also progressive scan will not add video information (not a higher resolution than interlaced), just how it's displayed.
