Is the phrase 'IBM-compatible PC' dead yet?

since IBM have nothing to do with ANY of the components in my rig (unless you count being vital forefathers of bits of it i guess...)?

I haven't seen it nearly as often on the requirements for software/hardware recently...

I mostly hear 'PCs' or more commonly a 'Windows system'. Haven't come across 'IBM PC compatible' in a long time.

IBM-PC compatible refers specifically to a pre-PCI system - because PCI systems are no longer strictly compatible with the original PC.

Actually, no, it's not. Never was. Your memory is fading. It was phrased as IBM PC compatible because the IBM PC was the product with which it was compatible. Having a PC that was compatible with "IBM" would make no sense whatsoever, because IBM is a company and can use whatever the hell kind of computer they want, thus making everything compatible.

Actually, I shouldn't say that. The people who write the system requirements to put onto boxes are generally total tardos and probably ignore basic grammar like that.

Although, even the newest Opterons and Xeons, on boot, fire up in 8086-compatible mode with 1MB of address space, just like the original IBM PC.
