Is the need for speed cultural or physical?

Thinking about the "American mold," the whole "consume so you feel better about how bad you're being fvcked over in life" mentality.... clearly SUV's (with the rare utilitarian exception... towing and moving cross country simultaneously... etc) are an example of that, but I'm not trying to pick a fight....

I'm wondering about the sports cars....

is the need for speed a cultural thing.... like the rims, suv's, big diamond engagement rings, 5 bedroom, half million dollar homes on quarter acre lots, or is it an actual physical addiction being fed that is not necessarily caused completely by society's brainwashing

The want to go faster has been around alot longer than the American culture has, and racing has been done in one form or another since ancient times. The 20th century has just moved it more away from Humans or Animals racing and into machines.
Just my perspective on the matter.

If you mean specifically the need for going fast (and not necessarily getting SUVs or chrome rims) then yes its cultulary independent.

No matter what the culture is, there are always people who want to go fast. Note that not everyone wants to go fast and I know many folks who don't care about speed..but its not relegated to your culture or bringing up..its just in you.

It's what makes race-car drivers who they are. They have an inner desire to go fast, no matter the method.

my ideal car would be as fast and as inconspicuous as possible, so for me, its physical. but i think for an awful lot of people, it's the other way around.
