Is the NBA is loosing the fan interest?

I was listening to a AM sports talk show here in Denver. The Host is concerned that the NBA is in a bad time. The points he was making were that fan interest is at a all time low anlog with ticket sales. Callers were calling in and the majority of them were saying that its just plain boring, and of course the absurd amount of money the players make is always a sore subject that callers talked about. But that can be applied to all pro sports, well except soccer.

What do you think?

Every sport has its ups and downs. Lockouts and strikes don't help the situation much either; not the mention the outrageous ticket prices.

I have no interest in the NBA. Apparently, they have decided to not enforce certain rules (traveling, palming) at all, and while personal fouls still get called, they have to be pretty stiff to draw a whistle. The players are so tall that many "shots" are no more than dropping the ball down into the hoop.

I always get a kick out of the "highlights" shown on TV - it's the same play every time. Big guy takes four running steps and slams the ball into the hoop. Yawn.

Even for as little as I see the action, it's obvious that the players are solely concerned about (1) stats and (2) styling. I don't think they even know who won the game. I agree with the "boring" assessment.

i'm a believer into soccer cuz the passion and competition is still there. True, YOU STILL have to be good to get into the NBA, but seems basketball is the next victim of these autrociatious baseball-type-salaries.

I still like watching NFL cuz these guys are not getting ridiculous amounts of money. True, they "earned" their money through hardwork, but seems wat life they are living is STILL out of reach of the typical viewer/watcher.

I suppose the same could be said about any sport.

Football: QB throws pass to WR, runs 10 yards. Or QB hands off to RB, runs 8 yards.

Baseball: Pitcher strikes out batter swinging. Batter hits ball, homerun.

Hockey: Player hits puck into net. Goalie makes save.

I still watch hoops, but it has become boring. The last really good NBA finals we've had was 92-93, Suns-Bulls. It seems since then, mugging defense became the way to go, which lowers scores and makes games BORING.

I would much rather watch a fast-paced 110-109 game than something like 79-70.

I don't really like watching the NBA or NFL cause it's basically the elite players from college playing for their paychecks. It just seems like they're just playin for the money and there's no real passion. Although I will have to say that the Ravens did play with passion this past year, which is why I enjoyed the Super Bowl this year. I just think NCAA football and basketball are more exciting because the fans are into it more and the players are playing for their school, pride, and to be considered the best in the US. Plus, I think it's refreshing to see players actually miss shots and make mistakes cause it makes for a more exciting and more intense game because just about anything can happen. Just my $.02 :)

Agreed

My friend Ben and I always have these really long chats about sports cause we are both huge fans on all sports like when we hang go to the movies etc

Today, we were talking about basketball and we just happened to talk about the NCAA. We both agree, it is just so much more exciting and while the NBA can be exciting at times, NCAA is just quality basketaball all the time

Example the Duke UNC game during rivalry week (I'm a UNC fan but still) we won but there was so much emotion in the game so much energy. Wish the NBA was like that.

The NBA has really suffered since Jordan's retirement. I find it interesting; for years people had attributed the league's success to the stellar leadership of David Stern, but now it looks a whole lot more like the real charm was having real superstars, like Magic and MJ. Part of the problem is that some of the truly great players (like Kevin Garnett and Vince Carter) are on mediocre teams, but even Shaq and Kobe do not seem to inspire the fan base that the stars of the '80s and '90s did.
