Is the KT266A chipset really that much faster than the 760?

I can get a fairly low cost motherboard locally that has all the features I want (RAID, sound, etc) but it's the 760 chipset.

Am I really giving up a lot of performance by going with this chipset versus the KT266A?

I was thinking I might have a more stable system with the 760 since the motherboards have been in production for a while.

My objective is to update my aging celeron system with an Athlon XP processor and amotheboard with built in IDE Raid. I'm going to use the system for video editing so I'm looking for cost effective features that aid in that activity.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Pigseye

Let put it this way. The prformance increment is "noticeable". Significant or not depends on each individual. Look around here. There r KT266A mobo w/ RAID & sound.

10-20% is the usual performance increase of the kt266a over the amd 761 chipset. I use the shuttle ak31 version 3.1 ($80 newegg). My system is very simple, one hardrive, no raid, scsi or usb devices, so the shuttle works fine for me. Read as many posts as you can before ordering, and remember that some mobo's like the new soltek sl-75drv2 have few posts because so few people are willing to gamble on them. If you are an experienced builder, check newegg's refurbished section to save some money. They had an abit th7-II with raid (for p4) for only $135 with free shipping. They also list 2 reviews of the soltek with the board info ($99 w/free shipping).

Thanks for the insight guys. "Noticable" performance difference and 10 to 20% does mean something to me. Reducing the rendering time of a video by 10 to 20% plus the additional improvement I get from RAID is very significant in the long run.

I appreciate your feedback.

I'll keep combing the threads looking for more info. So far I'm considering the Soyo Dragon plus and the MSI K7T266 pro2. Unfortunately, Anands initial review of the MSI was not positive from a performance perspective which defeats the purpose of going the to the KT266 chipset. oh well.

Thanks,

MSI is known for having slightly lower performance than the rest, but i believe from my experiences they must put that loss into something positive with their stability.. my K7T Turbo Limited Edition is an extremely good board, and I don't find it slow either, infact.. I am always one of the first to load the map up in q3, and the stability at 150FSB+ is top notch.. I'd definitely consider getting the K7T266Pro2.. I bet that would be one hell of a sweet board for you.. the 760 I wouldn't really say is more stable. the KT266A is hella stable anyways! I'd get the KT266A if i was you on a performance stanpoint, but the 760 is still a good chipset, and if you want to get that one locally, go for it.. you'll still be major satisfied with the improvement over your Celeron system.. the difference between the 760 and the KT266A is somewhat small on a money standpoint.. I wouldn't upgrade from a 760 to a KT266A at all.. the difference is slightly noticeable to the average person, but nothing HUGE.. Hope this helps..

good luck.

10-20%! I would say closer to 10% max, could you provide some documentation to prove this? Personally I have read alot of positive reviews of the KT266A and have used a few of the boards (Asus and MSI) , I have never used a 761 chipset based board but I cannot believe a 20% increase in performance between the two chipsets which are only what? a year? apart in age.
