Is the IT industry really that bad?

What the topic says. Another thread a few people recommended getting out of the IT industry or not even going into it anymore. I'm in it right now (only as a junior admin though) and looking to go back to school for some more technical knowledge, and was just curious why it's so bad.

It's not bad, it's just not what it was from '95-'00. You do actually have to know WTF you are doing, and companies have really trimmed down their needs for IT staffing. IT people are wearing a lot of different hats and one person is doing a lot more than they used to. Salaries got knocked down a few pegs too. It's still *decent*, but not as inviting as it once was.

Less jobs, less pay, harder to get into. To some that makes for a "bad industry".

Get smart about it. If the jobs are going to india, capitalize on that trend.

So you are saying ..??

Learn an Indian accent and do tech support from home for $2.00 an hour?

Start a translation service.

start an offshore indian outsourcing management firm and convince us corps to let your company manage the difficulties of finding and training the necessary talent for your biz needs.

The new role of us IT will be managing outsourcing relationships with vendors and otherwise.

I love my job... my company appeals to a pretty niche market, though -- people/companies who are willing to pay more to have great support. if they ever outsourced tech support, we'd end up loosing all our clients. heh.
