I heard Apple patched up the security loophole.

Would suck to upgrade and not be able to jailbreak it.

you are confusing jailbreak and unlocking.

jailbreaking allows for cydia to be installed which is an appstore that lets you do things that apps in the app store won't let you do (background apps, skinning the phone, tethering ect.)

unlocking allows you to use the phone on carriers other than at&t (in america).

jailbreaking is software only and will always be possible. unlocking was done with a program called yellowsnow and that whole was blocked with an update from apple. however the deve team developed ultrasnow which found another security hole, so you will still currently be able to unlock and jailbreak anything running 3.0

As far as I heard, 3.0 jailbreak is out for 1st gen and 3G, but not the new 3GS.

3.0 jailbreak isn't out for any device - yet. Follow modmyi.com and they'll let you know when the dev team does release it. As far as they know, it's going to work with all devices, but there isn't an unlock tool for the 3GS.

You sure about that? According to the dev team, 3.0 is jailbroken via PwnageTool (Mac OS X only). 2nd gen iPod touch and iPhone 3GS aren't broken yet but everything else is. Unlocking also does NOT work right now until they release ultrasn0w, which should be soon.

Exactly. The current jailbreak method relies on a hardware flaw. The iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch 1G all have the same processor and same flaw. The iPod Touch 2G has a different processor and as such has a different flaw. The iPhone 3GS has yet another processor, and there are no known flaws.

It may be a while until the 3GS is jailbroken via a software flaw, and a hardware flaw (so that it may join the "pwned for life" club) could take even longer. Don't expect a jailbreak for the 3GS any time soon.
