Title pretty much says it all,
Is the iPad more powerful than an iPod touch, if so by how much?
Tell me more about the iPad and what are a few things that can be done with one.

thanks

It is a tough situation. They have about the same amount of RAM, and the iPad has a slightly faster CPU, but it does have a higher res screen.

Should get about the same battery life, maybe a little better on the Touch. The Touch has the front facing camera, but again, the iPad has the larger, higher res screen.

If you were looking to get an iPad and can wait a few months, then I would say wait for the iPad 2 that one will almost definitely be better than the current Touch.

They are kind of for different purposes given the screen size differences.

Yeah, maybe the iPad will catch up to the iPhone 4 in 2011.

Well yea, but he was talking the Touch. The iPhone4 has 512MB RAM to the iPad's 256, and has the crazy screen compared to the Touch (same res, but is IPS and just looks a little better).

Price is a big factor. 32gig touch $300, 32gig pad $600. The touch is more portable, fits in your pocket, etc. They both have there places i suppose but need a lot of improvement.

Things i like to see in the IPod Touch but will prob never happen:
Better Camera/Camcorder, HDMI, USB, Flash, Larger versions like 128gb

Things i like to see in the IPad but will prob never happen:
Open SDK, Full GPS, Camera, Native Widescreen, Flash, HDMI, SD, USB, Drag and Drop and Multi-Tasking. Would also like to see a 5" version to make it more portable.

I know. It was just a little jab at the iPad. You'd think a product with the size and cost of the iPad would have at least as good specs as a cell phone, but nope.

Personally, I wouldn't buy an iPad now. If he decides he likes the iPad more than the touch, then get one... in 2011.

P.S. I'd like to see a 7" iPad. I find the 10" kind of awkward.

It will absolutely happen
HDMI
Probably not
USB

Probably not

It will absolutely happen once 64GB NAND is out/more prevalent

Open SDK
What's wrong with the current SDK?
Full GPS
Will happen

Will happen
Native Widescreen
Maybe... I think the 4:3 works for what it is
Flash
Probably not
HDMI
Probably not
SD
Maybe
USB
Probably not
Drag and Drop and Multi-Tasking
Multi-tasking is on 4.2, what do you mean by drag/drop?

Would also like to see a 5" version to make it more portable.

I think that the 5" is more likely to be a Touch and an iPad, not that it is that likely to happen any time soon.

ipad? no its an ipod touch with a nicer screen. everything else is the same. GPS is part of the 3G package. But that would be an iphone 4. The ipod touch is just cheaply made. everything about it is about making more profit by using substandard parts. the ipad on the other hand say a 16gb $429 refurb from apple is top notch in design.

i use both; daily. I have a kid and sometimes the ipad is too big to pack so the ipod does all that minus 3G and more (Facetime). i have a clear ispot haxored so i can do the facetime/line2 off the ipod just as well.

but it's all bit redundant to the iphone4.

Honestly i think the ipod and ipad cut into each others sales. Esp with the facetime on the ipod4. With the ipad2 coming with facetime that's once again going to cut into the ipod sales.

But some people with alot of sponsored funding (aka work) will just have all.

Thanks guys, I think I will pass on the iPad until it gets to be about as good as a low end laptop or a high end netbook.

Now that I think about it, id rather see the touch get a huge upgrade rather then Apple improving on the iPad. The iPad sure as heck is not very portable.

The iPad actually does have USB, of sorts. You just need the camera kit. Allows you to use third party keyboards and USB headsets. It also does have multitasking, added in 4.2.

I view the iPad as more of a net book replacement. Some things are just better with the larger screen.

you can score a macbook air for $500 . Add a 4G CLEAR ispot and you have a nice rig. light - powerful. I got a $700 rev.b macbook air with 1.5 years applecare (had a bad wifi card). took it str8 to apple and got a new wifi card. beautiful ever since.

then i got a rev.c 2.13ghz 128gb SSD with all the goodies and then some (dvd, spare adapter, display cable, 2 cases, remote, usb adapter, 2.5 years applecare) for $1200 - this way 6 months before the new models. solid.

A new 13.3" MBA equivalent to the rev.c with all those bells n whistles would cost well near $1800 - which is great but remember i got mine 6 months before the new ones came out so you could do better. maybe $1000 for the same rig.

the ipad is only good with 3g unlimited and jailbroken. to me. the new 4.2.1 sucks for many. no more keyboards/drives powered off the unit :(

i use the ipad for notetaking, ppts, and pdfs - it works great for general studying and lecture going for med school. i guess it all depends how you plan to use it. i got used to typing straight on the screen and i typically take around 50-100 lines of notes per lecture on it, usually directly on the lecture note pdfs they provide.

i use goodreader 99% of the time i'm using the ipad. it's a great app.

i still need a main computer, which is my 15 inch mbp - but i never take that to school as it basically serves as my dtr.
