I don't believe Plextor has an 8 by 4 by 32 IDE drive, just SCSI -- and if they did, it would probably work a lot better than what you have.

My impression, possibly wrong, is that even if some drives by a maker were rebadged Plextors, that wouldn't guarantee that all drives of that model were rebadged Plextors, i.e. they might switch manufacturers.

I was real tempted to buy an Iomega 12/10/32 because I heard it was really a Plextor -- but the fact that it might not be, plus the fact that I'd have to deal with Iomega's Tech support if anything did go wrong, finally dissuaded me. I had an Iomega USB drive a year ago and it was just a real nightmare, so I'll be awfully careful before I buy from them again. I'd rather pay a little extra and get a real Plextor -- I've had two and they both work great, my few service questions have been answered quickly and correctly, and most of the reviews seem to agree on the quality of the brand.

I also have the Iomega USB 4/4/6 CDRW, but it was a flawless burner on my machine. To my knowledge the 8x Iomegas are NOT Plextors, but Lite-ons.

I just bought the Creative 12/10/32E when it was the DOD from Buy.com. It is a rebadged Lite-on, but after reading several reviews I bought it over the Plextor as it has similar specs. And I did not want to WAIT for a rebate or pay over $100.00 for the drive. (The 4x USB works fine, just slow)

Long story short, I installed it and it RIPS through CDR's like nobody's business. I burned a 700mb disc in just over 8 minutes, and then checked it against the source for a flawless copy.

Scroll down a bit for 4 reviews of this drive.

And I LOVE the NTI CD-Maker SW that comes with the drive. It has been rock solid in my machine, and doesn't require it to run in the system tray like EZ. My CDR's spin up faster and access info quicker when burned on this drive, especially in my Kenwood Tru-X which is really crappy at reading CDR discs. Also comes with a Jewel Case Insert maker, a packet writer like Direct CD and a Drive Backup program. All in all for a hundred bucks, I am pleased with my purchase.

I burned my entire MP3 collection last night onto 8 discs, and it took longer to do the layout than it did to burn. I highly recommend this burner/software bundle.

Maverick, is the Iomega USB you got the original drive from a year ago, or is it the newer Predator model?

I suspect a lot of peripherals will work fine with a lot of different computers. It is how many different computers and software configurations they will work with that says something about their overall quality. In my case, the Iomega was a disaster, and looking at their own forum pages showed I wasn't the only one with problems. And, tech support was pretty bad. But, somebody with a different computer/configuration may find it works great.

Before anybody buys an Iomega, I suggest looking at Iomega's own forum pages. To their credit, they seem to censor few if any of the many very negative comments they get. To their discredit, they also seem to do little to help people out there.

I suspect, too, that two supposedly identical drives from the same company may actually have been made by two different manufacturers, which may account for differing experiences.

Guys .........whats the discussion about??........It's about a Iomega 8x model and not a USB drive........The Iomega 8x is made by Philips

It mutated from a discussion of a specific Iomega drive to Iomega drives in general. I've heard plenty of complaints like the original one, and for Iomega drives other than the 8/4/32. I think anybody should be careful before buying Iomega, although it probably is the case that the complaints will be disproportionately represented in forums. Given that somebody has had good luck with a specific Iomega device, in this case a USB drive, I'd be curious to know which USB device it is. If it is the same one I bought a year ago, then I assume the success is due to differences in our systems, but if it is the Predator then maybe Iomega has improved the product. I think it is helpful to know how a company does in general, because if they are providing poor support for one device I fear they will provide equally poor support for other devices.
