Is the internet too much for this computer?

Is the internet too much for computer to handle?

Currently, when I use firefox, neither the laptop touchpad or an external mouse allow the ability to click on any text link, I must tab through if I want to go anywhere. Certain websites are completely non-functional such as gmail or mapquest.

When I use IE instead, the resolution gets very grainy, and certain images display as black text boxes. Also, I can not type in IE, what I type on the keyboard takes a few seconds to display on the screen, and if I type a sentence quickly, when it finally appears on the screen, entire words or half of a word will be omitted.

This has been getting worse for a few weeks, so the only things I have open are either Firefox and IE and process explorer. Regardless of which browser I am using, process explorer shows that either browser is using continuously 80-99% of the cpu capacity, depending on other processes running, even when all webpages are loaded. The CPU sits at 100% capacity continuously.

Because this has been going on for multiple weeks, and I generally restart the computer once a day, I know a simple reboot won?t fix the problem.

I tried scanning the computer with fully updated Ad-Aware, and also I have McAFee Security Center, so I don?t believe it is a virus problem.

The computer is a 17in Dell Inspiron 9300, with 1GB ram and a 1.73 Ghz Pentium M processor. A year ago I was able to use the internet while using may other applications at the same. Now it struggles to use the internet.

What could be causing these severe computer problems?

You should run scans with Malwarebytes and if that doesn't clear things up, then run HiJack This and post in the Security part of the forum for analysis. Something is in the system, in my view. You might also try a rootkit scanner as well as doing another AV scan with another product. These scans should all be done in Safe Mode as some items / problems can not be removed if the pc is not in Safe mode. I realize the next item may sound basic, but when was the last time you cleared out all the Temorary Files ??

C:\Docs & Setttings\User ID\Local Settings\Temp (do for all users)
C:\Docs & Setttings\User ID\Local Settings\Temp Internet (do for all users)
C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Windows\Prefetch

I personally set my web browser to use as little cache as possible and also to
clear Browsing History on exit.

you almost certainly have some type of virus or spyware. there's no reason your cpu should be at 100% constantly.

i'm a strong hater of mcafee software and would recommend you download avg free and run another scan.

aside from that, do standard tune-up stuff- defrag your hard disk. check your startup with msconfig and remove unneeded crap. turn off visual extras in windows. every little bit helps.

you can also try uninstalling and reinstalling your internet browser if it seems to be the only application that is affected.

Download & Run MalwareBytes AntiMalware Full Scan.
Download & Run AVG Free.
Download & Run CCleaner.
Check your program list and get rid of any unnecessary programs. Download & Run Revo Uninstaller if you want to be anal about it.
Download & Run JKDefrag.

Report back here 🙂
