All time is a stretch, especially considering all the other major inventions that the internet is dependent on.

I think the light bulb might take that honor for me. There's a clear delineation between the eons humans spent in the dark with fire and the short period of time where we have light completely at our command.

I think domestication (both animals and crops) was far more significant. Without either, we'd be forced to spend the majority of our time hunting and gathering, preventing any major advances in science and technology. It was through organized farming or domesticated crops that early man was able to produce a surplus of goods allowing other members of society to spend their time on other things.

If I had to choose an invention, I would say the knife, or cutting tools in general. Other discoveries and later inventions might have been important, but knives are really under appreciated for what they allowed us to do from early history until now.

Of course, you'd have to question how successful the Internet would be if the TCP/IP protocol wasn't invented. IPX? No thanks.

Without the computer, what good would the internet be?

That's the problem with naming "greatest invention". All the modern inventions (pretty much everything since prehistory) are dependent on prior inventions.

The club. Aka a big bone from a dead animal.

We owe prehistoric man-apes our thanks for figuring out how to use rudimentary tools to accomplish tasks they were not capable of doing with their own hands.

Thus, the "invention" of tools, or else we wouldn't even be here today. Thanks man-apes! Thanks for figuring out a big bone could be used to smash in the head of some large, tasty animal - and the heads of the competition for sex.
