Is the Intel P35 chipset cheaper than P965 & 650i SLI ?

Acc to this,
By the way, Intel P35 boasts a few other significant strengths that may not be seen in the table. In particular, it is cheaper than iP965 and nForce 650i SLI and at the same time much more economical from the power consumption standpoint.

<innocent question>
Does that mean P35 based mobos will cost the same as P965/650i based boards ? It not, why ?
</innocent question>

according tomost other sites it uses way more power than the 965 and 945. so i have no idea what kind of crack those guys are smoking.

supposedly it uses about as much power as the nvidia 680

Power consumption is more with the P35 not less, hence all the elaborate NB coolers that are being implimented on P35 MB's

Can't respond on the cost of the chipset itself but the P35 MB's are a heap more expensive right now.
Gigabyte p965-DS3Pro = AU$152
Gigabyte P35-DS3R = AU$253

It's certainly possible that P35 chipset itself is cheaper to produce than other chipsets but it doesn't necessarily mean the market price (especially the final products - motherboards) is lower. Intel has huge manufacturing capacity and what they normally do is turning the old CPU fabs, which otherwise could be not running, to chipset fabs. Market price will be determined by the final products quality, and more than anything, supply/demand. For example, G80 might be cheaper than R600, but 8800 GTX is more expensive than HD 2900XT.

Oh and the latest AT article says the higher power consumption of P35 is due to having two memory controllers. (for both DDR2 and DDR3)

But since it shouldn't need to run both at once, it should be able to power-down those portions of the silicon. At least in theory.

It may be cheaper to produce/manufacture, but that doesnt mean retail prices will be low. However this is good news for not the consumer, but intel themselves since the margins will be good.

the pre-order prices that I'm seeing for abit's P35 range aren't - their top IP35 Pro looks to be the same prices as Asus basic P5K yet is considerably better featured & is similar to their P965 pricing.
Expected in retail here 2-3 weeks.
