Welcome to the AT Forums.

Retail heatsinks are alright if you're running at stock speeds. If you're oc'ing you may want to purchase aftermarket.

C designation denotes Intel's Pentium 4 Northwood procs running at 800 FSB with Hyperthreading Tech. (HT).

E designation are the newer Intel Prescott processors w/c increased L2 Cache size, a larger 31 stage pipeline from 20 stages of the Northwood. The Prescotts run hotter than the Northwoods also because of this.

the "c"s are Northwood core P4s, meaning they come with 512K L2 cache, 800FSB, and are great OCers.
the "e"s are Prescott core P4s, meaning they come with 1MB L2 cache, 800FSB, and don't OC too well and run hotter.

The HSF that comes with the P4 is OK for stock speed and mild OCing, but if you're planning on doing much OCing you'll want an aftermarket HSF.

If you plan on OCing, I'd get a "c".

I'm new and still unsure to overclocking.

BTW: I'm getting a Intel Pentium 4 3.0C Ghz processor w/ a Asus P4P800 mobo and I can't find what kind of memory would work well with it. Any suggestions are welcomed!

Thanks for the welcome note Rankor!! :)

with a nice mobo like that, you'll be OCing eventually;)

good RAM is Mushkin level 2, Corsair XMS, or Kingston HyperX.

Get at least PC3200, preferrably PC3500 or 3700. Try to get RAM with low latencies (like 2-2-2-6), but you probably won't be able to find much under 2-3-2-7 or 2-3-3-8.

well, OK, I shouldn't have said it's a "bad" OCer.

It's just that you can't push it as far, since your power supply/heatsink can't take it as well as the northwoods.

i have that kingston ram, and i love it, i bought some vantec copper heat shields to make it cooler, and i love it... and my 2.8E runs actually pretty low.. when playing games, its at 44-55C.
which aint really that bad considering i have a stock fan and heatsink....

Not so hot if you're going to overclock at some point. I'd get some some of the ones suggested earlier, kingston HyperX, Mushkin level 2, Corsair XMS, or OCZ (can't remember which one -- I think low latency...).

If you want to OC your P4C.....think MHZ over timings for your RAM. Best Buy has a great deal on Kingston HyperX PC4000 that will blow any OCZ EB or COrsair XMS PC3200 away (if you decide to crank up that FSB and run a 1:1 ratio). I used to have XMS 2-5-2-2 but decided to switch to PC4000 (3-8-4-4), my system now benches quite a bit higher in every category. Make sure you get your RAM in dual channel though.....that is the key, either do 2x256 or 2x512mb.

What's Best Buy's deal on the HyperX? I see on their site it's $199, but Newegg has em for around $180 and $163 if you buy via Kingston's Promotional Page Here.

too bad you weren't looking for this 2 weeks ago, BB had an instant rebate that brought the price to $119 for a 512mb stick, w/ another $10 mail in rebate, final price $109

Yea it was in the "Hot Deals" section for a while......they had their $199 price - $80 instant rebate - $10 mail-in rebate......free shipping online/ no tax.....= $110

I don't know how much of a gamble it was.....my sticks arent "matched pairs" but they work fine in dual channel....dont' know how picky mb's are with having "matched pairs"...but different lots of the same RAM work fine for me

Well you must have gotten the best memory ever created.....I haven't read anyone running PC4000 with those timings...

Why get PC4000 RAM and then run your FSB at 215?? You could have saved yourself some money and ran some good PC3200 with even better timings. Esp. with your M0 stepping P4C.....kinda a waste.
