Is the hookshot the best play/move/shot in basketball?

Hook shot is the weakest shot. You are right, it's hard to defend against, but it's so hard to perfect. How many players *regularly* use the hook? How many masters of the hook are there?

A quick crossover and shooting is almost unguardable. Even better is a quick crossover and fading to the right/left depending on which way dribbled.

That's very impressive...hell, the best NBA players can barely make 9/10 shooting in the standard manner, unguarded, from the free throw line.

that's not necessarily true.....what we see on TV doesnt' really show what players can do. a 90% NBA FT shooter is doing it in the middle of games, when they are tired, and in huge pressure situations. i'm willing to bet even a 70-80% shooter (in games) can nail like close to 90% when left alone in a gym.

hell, i remember during a pistons pre-game warm up, Rasheed Wallace (a decent 3pt shooter) was shooting left-handed three pointers and nailing them. once i saw him shooting half court shots like they were normal jumpers. he's an ~30% career 3pt shooter, but i'm willing to bet that if it were just in an empty gym, he could hit like 50% of them.

Well as for plays, I think universally a well executed pick and roll is unstoppable. As it comes to shots, if it were on a one on one situation, I would say a fade away is the hardest to contest.

Using that same math, you could say this coach who can hit 9/10 from the half court line alone in a gym, would be able to hit 3/4 of them during a game.

Imagine how good of a secret weapon that would be: the coach takes the ball down the court, stops before crossing the half-court line and just launches...Going 3 for 4 means he averages 2.25 points per posession.

Hell, you would barely even have to play defense...just guard against the three and laugh when they make easy layups because they'll never catch up just getting two points at a time.

I use the hookshot when I make my move from the left block to the middle.

The shot I think is the best is also my favorite (this is money for me every time I need a basket). Post up on the left block, two dribble downs, fake a turn around fade-away to the right, let the guy FLY by, then lean in under for an EASY layup.
