This guy I know told me that he visited a site that told you how to make homemade bombs. The next thing he knows FBI agents come to his house and ask him a few questions! They know everything about him: What college he attends, favorite foods, his girlfriend, etc... EVERYTHING!!

And he tells me that if you go on Kazzaa and download porn and the girls are under 18 yrs old, the FBI agents will come to your house and arrest you. And they know if your downloading MP3's, games etc...

I wonder if their watching us know?

Likely this guy was talking about em in public like a fool, and somebody overheard and reported him. Awhile ago, probably, cuz it sounds like the FBI did a bit of background info.

I call shenanigans. Yes, it's entirely possible that you're being watched. However, I doubt the FBI is watching every schnook who downloads porn off of Kazaa.

It was just on the news 200 something people busted for charging child porn sites on their credit cards.

While I don't know if carnivore is on every ISP or none at all. But
I don't think its used to see someone downloading porn, musics or games.
And I doubt if you do a search on homemade bombs and went to
a site, the FBI will be coming to your house for a visit. I doubt if you did
a search for making dirty bombs the FBI would go to your house.
Likewise, if you went to an anti-US site do you think the FBI is coming
to your house. Think of the number of people who probably download
porn and the number of agents that would require the FBI to have to
investigate every single one.
 
the way carnivore is supposed to work is to grab keywords.

So many keyword hits gets a message flagged.

flagged messages get reviewed.

I haven't looked into it much, but it wouldn't be that hard to tie into the top backbones and get the traffic.

Yeah, we've done it here in my group, currently amassing 3 TB/wk. We're watching 80% of all traffic.
Oh I remember back in the 80's when we tapped into the OC's running under the frickin' ocean too.

I am always surprised by how few people know about Echelon. If anything should have you concerned, this is it. It's been around for awhile and brings all your paranoid fears to reality. Here is one link I pulled it giving a basic description but there are plenty more available. Makes for an interesting read to be sure.

I'd suggest you look into Carnivore a bit and see how it can work pretty easy.

Nope, but i'd be willing to bet the NSA is.

Edit: there was a show on the History channel last night that mentioned that NSA system that monitors phone communications around the globe. It was about the hunt for Saddam and Bin Laden and about the times we thought we knew where they were due to eavesdropping of phone communications.

They do have gigantic banks of computers that do nothing but analyze data all day, every day and never take a break...God only knows what they are flagging.
 
I had a CS instructor who use to do some work for the NSA.
Did you know you can eavesdrop on a wired ethernet from quite some distance away?
