Is the GF 6800 really "only" ~12% faster than the 9800xt?

exactly . . . the 6800-GT doesn't suffer from "driver" issues that "supposedly" plague the (vanilla) 6800. 😛

Here - in these cases - DOUBLE the memory - helps the 9800xt out . 😉

Yes, after looking at some other benchmarks I've concluded that you're probably right. They should have given this card 256mb of RAM then; 128mb seems really quite stupid. Apparently there is a very good chance that there will be 256mb 6800 cards in the future, which will prove to be interesting. On top of that, I've heard grumblings of ATi and nVidia's next midrange offerings scoring 7000 and 8000 points in 3Dmark03 respectively. Wow is all I have to say. 🙂

three benchmarks at 16x12 - CoD, FC, and Il2 Sturmovic - place the 9800xt ahead.

Yes, i was surprised nVidia limited its vanilla 6800 so much . . . there are also SEVERAL versions of the vanilla 6800 - some with LOWER clocked memory and Core (so be Aware). i also believe there will be a 6800 w/256MB memory - that'll take it over the 9800xt EVERY time. 😉

i do think there is "something" to that 12% eVGA figure - it's clearly "overall" and also probably conservative (which is a real shock).

and 7-8K for the next midrange cards is pretty good . . . my 9800xt only gets ~6600. 🙁

My GT scored almost 8000 with 4x/8x in '03 😀 I had no idea that benchmark could look so purty because I always benched with "looks like crap" settings for high scores 😛 BTW, any game that the 6800 can't handle@16x12 already isn't likely to be playable simply because it has more ram, don't you think?

i dug it up . . . there are different versions of the 6800. 😛
(i even found an Asus one that claims to be 25% faster then their competitors 6800s)

AA6800 - NVIDIA® GeForce? 6800, 128MB DDR SDRAM
AGP interface

4x/8x AGP supports
Chipset NVIDIA GeForce 6800
Memory 128MB DDR SDRAM

358 MHz engine clock

770 MHz memory clock

SA6800 - NVIDIA® GeForce? 6800, 128MB DDR SDRAM
AGP interface

4x/8x AGP supports
Chipset NVIDIA GeForce 6800
Memory 128MB DDR SDRAM

325 MHz engine clock

700 MHz memory clock

I think you're right. The PCB on my 6800 has 128MB and 256MB printed with a dot in the box next to 128MB. I gotta wonder how another 128MB will affect the pricepoint though.

Isn't it just DDR1? Shouldn't affect it much if the design already accomodates it. Not like the DDR3 on the GT and ULtra.

yes, its DDR1...but 128MB of even DDR1 costs money and it doesn't have "that" far to go before running up against 6800GT, which it will never compete against.

the gt needn't fear competition from the plain 6800 w/256MB memory UNLESS you can get the other 4-pipes enables. 😉

We DO know there are ALREADY several versions of the Chaintech 6800 - and the Asus site claims THEIR card will be 25% faster then the other 6800s (perhaps it has more ram?).

If the 6800 is ~$300, that leaves room to for a faster version (~$350) yet still under the GT's price point.

You mean this one?
Link

Gddr3, 256 MB, 350/1000......hmmmm if it looks like a ....
Over 25% faster than other competitors with 6800GPU ASUS GameFaceLive?
Over 25% faster than other competitors with 6800GPU
ASUS GameFaceLive?
ASUS VideoSecurityOnline?
Advanced and stylish blue LED thermal solution
High quality webcam bundled
The Hottest 3D Game Bundled [/quote]

YOU FOUND IT!!!!!

i "lost" it in my history . . . i KNEW there was a 256MB version of the 6800 (now THAT'll beat the 9800xt by MORE than 12% in EVERY bench) . . .

now the Asus one is probably dangerously close to the "GT" performance . . . and probably halfway between the price of a vanilla 6800 and a gt. 😉

EDIT: i did a google search. . . looks like it's already available in Europe @ 460 Euros.

Thats what? $570 USD?

not sure about the exchange, but the same sites offer the (Gainward O/C) 6800Ultra for ~950 Euros 😛

Think we have it bad here?
