is the GeForce 590 worth it for gaming @ 1920x1080?

Got a new PC with a 580gtx. Am now starting to wonder if I should have shelved out a little more for the current monster 590 card. For 1920x1080 on a single 120hz monitor, would the 590 be overkill? I know only I can decide whats good for me. Still though, would like to see some input from folks here who are very knowledgeable in this area. Thanks!

I think SLI 580's is a better idea than a 590.

Edit to add both are overkill for 1080p though.

But why? What is the reasoning?

Well, I guess better framerates and even better future proofing (as much one can future proof) for a GPU.

for 1080P a single 580 is fine, trust me. Im running SLI OC'ed 460's which might be 10% faster than a 580 so pretty much the same speed as you and i game at 1080P and have no issues maxing out pretty much all games except the really poor coded ones(Metro 2033 for example).

If i was you i would keep the single 580 and wait for 1-2 years and see what 28nm has to offer, wait til 28nm has matured a bit and the second gen 28nm cards are out and then consider a upgrade at that time.

Agreed with rifterut. A single 580 is fine for 1080p, I wouldn't go further than that unless you need 2560x1440.

Also be aware that a 590 is not equal to 580 sli, it is closer to 570 sli. the 590 is clocked lower than a standard 580, something like 610 versus 778 for the 580.

You will be very happy with a single 580, trust me.

No, what I meant was, are you experiencing slowdowns that render the games you play, unplayable? That is what I wanted to know. If the answer is no, then stay where you are. Otherwise you'd just be going after fps bragging rights IMHO.

Hell i'd say a 580 is well worth it for 1080p :) Games like metro 2033 / crysis 2 DX11 are barely playable with anything but a 580 at that resolution (with medium/high detail). Alot of newer games will be extremely demanding (moreso than metro 2033 or crysis 2), so if your budget allows it....go for it imo.

Actually crysis 2 runs really well on a single 5850 at 1080p once i disabled tessellation. Did it for kicks and was amazed at how smooth it ran. Metro (high, very high ran like crap) also runs really well if you disable DOF, that kills most cards.

if you have the kind of system that can fully push a gtx590, or gtx580 sli then go for it. there are plenty of games, even without lots of AA, where I can not even stay above 40 fps with a gtx570 at 1920x1080. heck if I max every setting in Clear Sky, I cannot even average more than 20 fps in spots.
