Is the GeForce 3 fully DirectX8 compliant?

Now the tough question.

Do I buy a GeForce3 now....or some variety of GF2 now and a GF3 later....

The GF3 has very little use...but in order to make it worth doing the GF2->GF3 step the GF3 would have to drop to below half it's current price.....and I think it will be a while before it does that...

Does anyone know if Newegg.com ships to Canada? They have a very nice price on a GF2Pro 64MB....that would make it more worth my while...but my price on Pros is pretty high compared to the GF3... slightly over half the 64MB GF3's price for a 32MB Pro...🙁

Go with the gf2 pro 64mb ddr...they have one at newegg for like 142 +10S&H =152.00. Get damn near ultra performance without the extra 100 bucks. Spend 150 now and 150 for the gf3 in about a year when games may start to take advantage of the dx8.

I would do that. But the problem is, I'm in Canada.
My price for a 64MB Pro is over $200US.
My price for a GF3 is under $400US.

The GF3 will have to drop a long ways before the intermediate step is worth it...

I don't know if Newegg.com will ship to Canada. Do you know?

From their policies page:

<< Sorry, No International shipment. >>

I would guess that's a no.

In my opinion, it's best to just get a GF3 now. It will last longer than a GF2 Pro and probably save you money if you're planning to get a GF3 eventually.

Dude, I would say just get a Geforce2 MX. I mean what Res are you running at? 1024x768 and getting 80+FPS for a $80.00 cant be beat. I mean I dont understand why everyone wants a card that can do 200FPS. I would just buy the MX, and then wait for somthing that just Blows everything AWAY. Not just in speed, but in features that can actully be used and seen the day you install the card.

I had a Kyro2...but I wasn't terribly impressed.

I got 65FPS at 1024x768x32 max details in Quake3.

Not that that isn't enough or anything....but Anand got over 100....

He was using an Athlon 1000/133 in Win98...I was using a Duron 1000/133 in Win2k. My Duron is indeed slower but a 35fps drop tells me the Win2k drivers aren't to hot for the Kyro....

Can a GF2MX really pull 80fps in 10x7x32?

That's quite sufficient...and they are pretty cheap.....

You can get GTS cards for just $200 Canadian.... That's not bad to keep you tied over until GF3. 😉 Or a Radeon LE or DDR for <$150 Can.

$200+ for the GF2 PRO, and $400 for the GF3. Wow, that's a tough one. Those prices are right on the borderline of what my decision would be. I mean, if the PRO were a little more, or the GF3 a little less... then I'd say to go with the GF3.

But if you made me decide right now, I'd still say to go with the GF3. For a few reasons:
1) You won't regret the GF3. There won't be any "what if?" in the back of your mind. You might end up kicking yourself in the near future, for not going for the GF3.
2)Some say to get the GF2 and wait until the GF3 comes down in price, and sell the GF2 at that time. Well, the GF2 won't be worth much at that time. So, are you really coming out ahead in the long run?
3)There are features in the GF3 that today's games can take advantage of. Speed, especially at high resolution. Quincunx FSAA (which is much better than the GF2's FSAA). Better 2D quality, if you happen to get a GF2 with poor 2D quality.

Hope this helps. 🙂

I had a Radeon...and the thought of putting another in my system still makes me shudder a bit....I know the drivers are better now...but I could only get like 1 in 3 games to work with the Radeon before...

A GTS I suppose...but I want a 64MB card...can you get a 64MB GTS?

You see...my Voodoo3-2000 lasted me damn near 2 years. In the last 6 montsh I've done all kinds of dumb crap with my video card.

V3->Radeon->V3->V5->Kyro2->TNT2M64....

And I"m getting sick of it. I want a nice solid card that will last me at least a Year so I can stop worrying about it. Like my V3 did.

It's just $589 is alot of dough...

In the GTS's favour: A GTS will cost about 3x less than GF3...
Will a GF3 last 3x longer in your PC than the GTS would? 😉
$200 (can) GTS + $250 GF3 = $450-500(?) down the road, as opposed to:
$600 + tax now.

I'd go with a decent 32MB GTS (or a 64MB GTS if you can find one that doesn't cost as much as a pro well over $100 more.) Get the GF3 when there's a legitimate NEED for it.

actually, the G3 is not completely directx 8 complaint. There are too many features for it to try and support.
