Canadian Federal spending watchdog did a report now all spending on the project is frozen:

OTTAWA — Canada's federal spending watchdog refused to target anyone for blame Tuesday after his office released a scathing report on the Defence Department's handling of the F-35 stealth-fighter project.

Instead, Auditor General Michael Ferguson put the onus on the government to clean up the process for replacing the country's aging fleet of CF-18s to ensure transparency and proper oversight.

"It's difficult for me to try to point fingers at any particular individual," Ferguson said shortly after tabling his report in the House of Commons. "What it comes down to is the process was not what it should have been."

The Conservative government reacted quickly, promising a complete and public review of the stealth-fighter program and opening the door to potential competitors.

Everything you hear about it just makes it seem terrible. Tech issues, cost over-runs long delays on production. Extreme on all points

I think instead of spending money on fighter jets, they could have invest into infrastructure instead.

Why does Canada need a fleet of fighter jets anyways? You know if anyone ever was stupid enough to attack them the United States would stick its beak in immediately.

No one would even consider attacking Canada. Ever.

Canada is adorable.

Yes, no one will attack Canada.

At the same time, they can feel free to drop billions of dollars for American military tech. It's cash flow. Would it be worth it? It would be an upgrade from the current F-18 backbone, though not a huge one. Raptors would be better if the US didn't bar their export.

to maintain this privilege and protection, Canada needs to buy from and support American military complex :)

Purchasing the F15 and F18 will provide everything that Canada needs. she could go to Europe if desired for competition

Cheaper and just as effective as long as coordinate with a combat control system.

The F35 was a pipe dream sold by Lockheed to willing suckers. The amount of new technology in the F35 is minimal - it would have been better for the F22 and F35 to be test beds for the following generation.

The last all in one solution that worked was the Phantom.

The Vampire was not that effective as a multi-service platform.

why isn't this in P&N?
Discussing Canadian politics in P&N is like discussing sex in L&R. No one has any real knowledge of the topic.
IronWing for elite!!

I don't think the F-35 is worth it. Get F-22s or settle for F-15Es.

Aren't the F-22's like 3 times the price AND giant piles of junk? Like an entire fleet grounded kind of junk?

The CF-18s are getting old but Canada really doesn't need an advanced stealth fighter to handle what the air force looks after. Mostly medium duty patrol and ground assault. It would be cheaper to simply buy new F-18s, or opt for an alternative such as the F-16 or Eurofighter Typhoon, which come in at half the price of the F-35.
