Is the Evolution mail client for gnome only?

I use evolution in KDE all the time....it's not restricted to one desktop environment

You have to have the Gtk libraries and some other gnome specific stuff for it to run, but you don't need to have the full blown gnome install. It will work with any window manager as long as its supporting files are there.
