The end of the world has been coming since the beggining of the world, nothing new. In some 4 billion years the sun will expand to encompass the inner 3 planets before collapsing back down into itself. It is very doubtful that human kind will be around to see it, as we're so self destructive in nature that we're lucky to have made it this long. (however this long is not that long on the grand scale) It would be interesting to see if other intelligent life were to exist in the universe if it also had similar tendencies, or was able to evolve beyond that.

Interestingly enough, the dominant interpretation of Biblical Prophecy for over 100 years has stated that the battle of Armageddon would involve certain Actors. These Actors have been determined to be China, Russia, and Germany. How these Actors have been determined are basically:

1) China: This is the vaguest of the 3. Prophecy(all Biblical) talks about an army of 200Million soldiers from the Kings of the East. An interesting aside concerning the current situation, the Prophecies talk about a river drying up which allows this huge army to have access to Israel, this river flows through Iraq!

2) Germany and Russia: Both of these have been determined by tracing back the origins of the "tribe" mentioned in Prophecy. The "German" tribe could be somewhat inaccurate, because of the transient nature of European tribes through the ages, could be Europe in General and not specifically Germany, though this is JMO.

Other Actors(primarily various MidEast peoples) join these 3 in an attempt to conquer Israel. Once arriving at the scene, what sounds alot like Nuclear Exchange(eyes burning in their sockets, flesh melting off bones before the body even falls to the ground) occurs killing all of them.

Yes it is - but not for a while. Frankly at this point even if there was a big nuclear war it would have to be of a catastrophic size to make the planet inhospitable, even if human society as we know it now was totally buggared. There are still people who live in the Arctic ;0
