Is the economy affecting you directly?

It's been a tough week. After getting to 4 final interviews, I got 2 dings/1 waitlist this week. Hopefully my 4th one doesn't ding me or I'll consider myself a failure. I can't think of a worse time to graduate. Anyone else in the same boat?

Did you do internships? What degree did you get, what market are you looking to get into, and kinds of places are you applying?

Are you entirely sure this is due to the bad economy, or do you just not have an attractive resume?

Same here... not affecting me directly...but I've had several friends lose their job and my brother-in-law got a really raw deal with losing his job as it was a really inopportune time for him as several other investments he had been involved in were falling apart (partners going into bankruptcy). I feel really bad for him and hope that my good luck prevails. Luckily my skills are fairly marketable even in today's market (SAP consultant)...but I still feel lucky.

I'm at a top tier law school, and while I've been fortunate enough to line up a good job at a firm this summer, several of my friends, whose grades would have landed them nice jobs in years past, have not.

Yeah, the response I got from some of the recruiters was that they were impressed with my interview, but they found more qualified applicants. I feel that if I applied last spring, I would have gotten some offers.

On a personal level, yeah, I feel the pinch a bit. To continue carrying zero debt month to month, we've had to budget a bit.

Two of my friends businesses are really really slow. Another friend, well today is his last day at his job, got laid off after almost 4 yrs.

So if four interviews right out of school go poorly you feel you're a failure?

I think everyone is effected by this bad economy to some degree. I'm thankful to have a decent job, but for us they postponed our merit increases 6 months. The raise I was supposed to get in Sept. won't appear until March. Pretty annoying for a Fortune 20 company that has growing revenue and is making a profit... sometimes I think execs will use the economy as an excuse just to save a few bucks even if the company is doing ok.

After 6 months I have finally gotten interviews. 1 interview went into and through 2nd interviews, they baited me for a month, and then gave the position to someone else. I've been to two other interviews, one of them doesnt' seem promising at all, the other one I haven't heard back about the second interview due to the manager going on vacation. :(

I've sent apps to several companies including the US Patent Office, and the DTRA, without any feedback yet :(

you aren't the only one.

Yeah, but look at it this way. Having your merit increase postponed is a lot better than being laid off right now/getting your house taken away from you/etc.

I'm pretty thankful to have a job right now. My company's execs say that they're not laying anybody off, but if the economy gets a lot worse they could always decide to reverse that decision.

I'm not getting to affected by it right now ... I graduate college in December 2009. I will probably feel it then. On the other hand, I do have a great internship at a great company, so we'll see how it all pans out ... !!!

Supposedly 09 isn't gonna be any better and could possibly be worse :(

Towards the end of your internship, try to express interest about full-time permanent employment and see if they will offer you a position.

The company I worked for as lead programmer went down a few months ago. I'm freelancing now and things are really quiet coming up to christmas.
