is the drive bad

when i boot the light comes on and the drive spins but i get strike f1 to reboot, f2 to run setup utility
i booted from xp cd and i couldnt find the hard drive
tried fdisk and it said error reading fixed disc
tried partition magic and got an error
tried bart pe and could see the hard drive
the manufactures diagnostics gave an error
traded the ide cable and got the same thing
is there anything else i can do see if its bad
its my teachers hard drive and he has lots of pics on it

You seem like you covered most things..

If you errored out in fdsik and the manufactors disk, I would think the drive is defective.

If you put it in a working machine as a slave, does Windows see it?

Are you able to access it?

 
the wierd thing is that it doen't seem to post

i dont get a memory test or anything

the bios screen appears and then it beeps one time and then "Strike F1..."
