Is the CD-ROM drive going the same way as the dinosaur?

Seems nowadays that new computers are being built & shipped with DVD-ROM drives. Even the build your own enthusiast will pop in a DVD- ROM or burner.
A CD-ROM may save you 5$, but other than that I can?t see the need.

Perhaps.. except that dedicated CD-ROMs or CD-RWs: 1) run at faster speeds, and 2) are more capable of copying certain copy-protects than DVD drives, it appears. At least on the burner side of things. Some DVD-ROMs make good (if not high-speed) CD readers too, namely the Toshibas.

I hope so. it'll alert gaming industry to move to next medium, DVD. it's annoying to keep changing your 6 discs while installing games. most idiots still dont realize how cheap DVD is right now, and whine "but we dont have money to buy DVD and dont see the neccessity of doing so!"

dvd is just a higher density cd, so, not really

most idiots don't see how cheap dvd is?

the license is more expensive than that for 6 cds

The CD-ROM will die much faster than the floppy. That said, I only buy CD-ROMs in home and work computers (unless there is some special deal that gives an upgrade for free). Why spend $10 more for something I'll never use (DVD or burner)?

no. most companies sell their DVD version and CD version the same price. sometimes, they even add bonus features in their game for DVD.

ah not all companies. For example, for HL2 here in the US, you have to buy the collectors edition if you want a dvd, otherwise you are stuck with 6 cds.

the only game i play is civilization 3 and everytime i reinstall window, it is a pain. 3 cds ( my computer is old so it took a long time to install)

I thought you meant CD and DVD drives both. I have a second hard drive in the laptop bay that used to have my optical drive and can't even remember where I put the thing. Any discs I need frequently I just keep images of since it's more convenient even on the desktop. Hard drives have improved so fast, optical drives are practically stationary.
