Is the Cayenne just as good as M-Class or X5?

Well, if you had the money you wouldn't consider the vw over the porsche version, especially not over the twin turbo....same chassis but almost everything on the porsche version is improved (other then the non-s cayenne which is basically a POS)....the porsche engine sounds better, has more oomf and the truck has a classier interior along with better handling....

With that said I'd never buy a cayenne and I think it's an insult to porsche that they built it the way they did....basically using over half the vw parts and then just improving on it a bit....IMHO should have been built from the ground up to be all porsche.....

Actually, the exterior looks aside (I do think the VW has a nicer looking exterior), the interior of the VW is higher quality too. Materials, are a pretty big step up in quality, both tactile feel & look.

Interior

The Cayenne S has marginally more HP, but the slightly greater weight negates pretty much all of that advantage, unfortunately.

apex...you show a pic of the vw interior? what for? Better materials? Maybe you should do some research, they are almost the same other then the fact porsche uses better looking instrument dials (maybe my opinion but I think if you look at both most would agree), a higher quality nav screen and a better steering wheel.....the rest of the interior is almost the same...also the porsche has more options for customizing the interior- of course this further adds to the cost....Again, we're not talking about what car is the better value because most likely that's the vw, we're talking about what's the better SUV, price aside and I think it's a pretty easy answer....especially if you're comparing the vw to the twin turbo....

Actually, I have done some research. I've spent quite a bit of time in both vehicles. You also only need to take a quick check in any mag (c&d, r&t, automobile, etc) and they all agree the VW has a higher quality interior. It's most evident in the front center console, where the diff settings and air suspension control is (where porsche makes extensive use of plastics), but you can also tell all over the dash.

this is a joke right? if anything the FX would be last on that list, or better yet not even on it.

Definitely last. Europe > Asia.

I'm not a big fan of the porsche\audi\vw\lambo company.... But I'd still take a Cayenne Turbo over any VW.

I drove the Cayenne S with my Dad last month. It is extremely fast, and handles and stops like a boxster.
120 M/h felt like about 50. Last year, when we test drove the X5, it was good but not great like the Cayenne.
I have to admit though, the X5 looks better.

The Touareg is essentially the same as the Cayenne.

Not in price and NOT in looks.

Touregg is a beauty. Cayenne is fugly!

The Cayenne has BIGGER engines than Touareg. At least at first, the Cayenne came with some 4.4l gas-powered and Touareg with a 3.3l V10 diesel and a smaller gas-powered. Now the W12 from the Phaeton can be had on Touareg

THe Toureg has three engine options: the V6 (which is almost an inline 6 - 15 degree "V"), the V8, and the V10.

The size of the engine doesn't matter as much as the power-to-weight ratio.

A friend of mine had a 'Vette (bought new) which was completely tricked out - ~US$50,000 in engine and "speed upgrades & modifications." When he when to the track to run it, he was routinely beaten by a supercharged Miata - because the power-to-weight ratio in the Miata was superior.

The Treg has more-than-enough power to keep things interesting, and is a very comfortable ride. The fit & finish (at least in mine) is excellent.

It doesn't really boil down to which one is "better;" style, comfort, and power needs are very subjective.

Shop around, buy what you like, and what fits your needs.

Easy enough ...

I still say that if I were to buy an SUV (which I probably never will) and I had a ton of money to blow on it, I'd be looking at mainly the Cayenne Turbo and the Touareg V10 TDI, depending on budget.

The Cayenne is in another class compared to the M-class or X5. I've driven a Cayenne S, X5 4.8 and Ml500 and although the X5 is a great truck, it does NOT have the soul that can be found in the Porsche. The Cayenne's exhaust is amazing and its roadhandling phenonimal. Although the handling of the X5 is also excellent, it feels different then that of the Porsches. When you go around corners at sub-sane levels, the BMW will glady accept any challenge while in the Porshce it seems to scream, go faster you b****. Also at about 120, the stability of the Porsche seems to be the same as if you were going 80. The highest I've been in the Bmw is about 80 so I really can't commemt.

The Ml500 on the other hand just seemed very oridinary compared to the other two..

Out of those models, The Cayenne Turbo is much more attractive as it's a fairly exclusive model, they don't make many at all. Plus, as indicated, despite the weight, very powerful and capable vehicle.
Unless the X5 get the v10 m5 engine...maybe call it the MX5 (hehe, BMW miata)...its not really comptetive with a cayenne turbo.
MB hasn't really had a factory SUV (AMG or otherwise), that can perform at the sports car levels. Obviously the big MB tuners can make anything happen, but their prices even exceed what a stock Cayenne Turbo would cost.

And back to my Subaru post, for approx $120k, I think a Forester XT, with a seq shift rally trans, modified turbo engine, a complete body teardown w/structural enhancement, upgraded sus and brakes, you could get a reasonably serviceable SUV that would go further off-road, carry as much stuff and be faster than any of the above.

ya the subaru might....until you get into subaru's crappy residual values and realize your basically pissing money....and it's a subaru

Yup, it'll still be a Subaru after you do all that to it, and it won't have the soul of a Porsche (Por-sha).

They don't make the FX45 anymore.

Cayennes and MLs suck. Gimme the new 4.8l (380hp) X5 any day of the week.
Yup, the 4.8is X5 is my dream car.

BTW, I've heard bad things about the Toureg build quality... can anyone affirm this ?

The Touareg/Cayenne's are pretty typical of first year builds. Some minor problems here and there, but overall strong.

btw the range rover is so much better than the cayenne or any of the others, and it can actually go off road with out being a risk to your life, which is always a plus point i find
