Is the Cayenne just as good as M-Class or X5?

"good" meaning in terms of Off-Road capability or on road performance or the luxury factor?

Road and Track (or it was car and driver?) did a Euro SUV comparo a while back, and I believe the Cayenne ranked second or first.

At first I meant good overall but I suppose I would stress luxury + design over its off-road capability.

The Touareg is essentially the same as the Cayenne.

Not in price and NOT in looks.

Touregg is a beauty. Cayenne is fugly!

yes, the toureg is MUCH better looking, but isn't the Cayenne rides on much much nicer suspension? (only if I could remember where I read that comparo article)

last I checked the Cayenne had a decent towing capacity. Many of the other's didn't.

Like the 4-runner has a better capacity then the bigger and more expensive Toyota SUV (forget the name).

It's hard to find a 26'+ capable boat puller without going F250/2500 series+

this is a joke right? if anything the FX would be last on that list, or better yet not even on it.

They don't make the FX45 anymore.

Cayennes and MLs suck. Gimme the new 4.8l (380hp) X5 any day of the week.

Or how about the fact that you have SUV practicality with a twin turbo charged 4.5L V8 that'll do 0-60 in under 6 seconds, brake as well as pretty much any car on the market..even those half its size, and handle with the best of them.

It's probably as close to a sports car as you can get in an SUV.

The looks are highly debatable. I actually like the way it looks..but in terms of practicality and its characteristics, there's nothing on the market quite like it.

The FX45/FX35 are my pick also

Acura MDX, Lexus GX470, LX470, RX330, BMW X3, Escalade, Envoy, Hummer, H2, RangeRover .................

Ultimate Pimp Ride... Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen

The air-ride package is also available on the Touareg. It automatically settles to take max ground effect or can be manually overridden to give almost two feet of ground clearence.

Aside from appearances, the Touareg has a 50/50 power split AWD, the Porsche is a 60/40 power split AWD.

The V10 TDI is roughly the same HP as the V8, but has nearly DOUBLE the torque (torque gets you off the line, HP gives you the top-end).

It's a great ride. I have one (got it ~four months ago). Haven't gone off-road yet, maybe in the next week or two. Very quiet, very stable ... excellent road vehicle. I tried the american SUVs, I tried the rice-burners ... the Treg was much more comfirtable for me. Between the X5 and the Touareg, the Touareg had more room and more features, and had more-than-enough guts. It was also much less expensive.

Take one out and try it.

It IS a first year vehicle, and there are a few bugs ... most/all have been identified and are correctable in one service visit (reported air bag fault, tire pressure monitor, compass light flashes ... nothing critical).

All-in-all, I'm very satisfied.

Not doubting the Toureg and its capabilities, but rather don't think one can really compare it to the Porsche since the buyers will be two very different people, one is looking for a high end marquee and performance, the other is looking for affordability and functionality.

IMHO the X5 is the next closest competitor, personally I would take the X5 over all based on price, features, marquee and build.

For a minute I thought you were talking about the Subaru F-XT, which is not only faster, but gets twice the gas mileage and is very practical.

You got the V8 or the V10TDI?

Did you get in on the Keyless start group purchase?

Personally, I like the Cayenne's handling better than the Touareg's. The suspension tuning is different, more towards onroad handling than offroad, which would be more appropriate for my driving. Power delivery on the Cayenne S's V8 is marginally better than the Touareg's V8, though it's close. Is it worth $15-16k more roughly equivalently equipped? I don't think so.

I drove the BMW X5 4.4i (2003, 2004), 03 BMW X5 4.6is, the 04 Cayenne S, Volvo XC90, and a few others before settling with the VW Touareg V8 last year. It had the best mix of features for the price. The 4.6is and Cayenne S were marginally more fun to drive, but for the $15-20k difference, I'd rather put that into the sportscar.

No, no V10 yet for me. I'll play with this one for a year or so until the V10s (or better) are more available.

Have you checked out vwvortex.com yet, or clubtouareg.com?

Different cars for different people ... if everyone wanted the same thing, all of 'em would look and ride the same. For me, the Treg was the best all-around compromise AND it was a pretty good deal.

To tell you the truth, so far, the biggest disappointment for me was the dealer install of my PhatNoise box, and VWoA's apparent total lack of desire to provide customer service. The dealer has picked up the slack on that end, and I had a local mobile electronics place correct the installation (at no charge to me).

I'm very happy overall.
