Does the 520 have 4 seperate ink tanks?

I assume you mean print photos so that she can make a watercolor of the photo. I have a 4 color Canon I850 and am happy with both the photo and text capability. The IP4000 is two generations newer and includes (this is called 5 color) a "photo" black along with the text black. This should improve contrast which I'm already happy with. What I like best is that it takes just over 1 min. to print a 8X10 photo and the $40 ink set lasts 6 months or more for me.

If I were to buy a printer now, I would look at the IP5000 also. It is also a 5 color text and photo printer, but with dots that are about 1/2 the size for about $40 more.

Buy it from OfficeDepot. Use it. Return it if you don't like it. Keep it if you do. It's really not that hard.

The iP4000 is excellent and is the Consumer Reports current "Best Buy" at the usual $150. price. You can get it for around $80.+sh AR quite often (was that a couple days ago on newegg). As soon as the word really gets around that the new Canons that were just introduced have chipped carts, the current Pixmas may start going for a premium. He who hesitates...

i recommended the ip4000 to two people i know, (i own the ip3000 & i950)... the ip4000 pics are very very good, pretty comparable to my i950 but quieter operation... the ip3000 is for my kids' pc for their everyday printing, and it prints fairly nicely, well worth the $52...

canon printers give good quality. But their colour are not as long lasting as Epson's or HP's, so colours tend to fade quicker

i like my ip3000, and the ip4000 has an additional black, either one would be good imo

I'm not quite sure what your wife is doing with the watercolor paint. Is she paining a copy of a picture you are printing out on canvas, or is she painting over on outline of a line drawing that you are downloading?

If she is going to be actually painting on top of the printout with watercolor paint, you don't want to use a regualr inkjet, because the colors will run when you get them wet. For that application, a laser would be better. Epson also has waterproof Dura-Brite inks on a lot of their models that don't run when they get wet.

Batman, she is painting a copy of pictures I print for her. Just trying to get the resolution good enough for her.

Thanks guys for your comments. Looks like an ip4000 is in the future when I locate the low dollar price.

I have the ip3000, it is great. I would think the ip4000 with the four tanks CMYK plus black is going to be very good for you.

Zepper, Your prediction has come true!! Preminum price--how about Newegg at $171 plus about $10 shipping, for a 4000. Of course I can purchase it at less but I don't really know much about the sites that have it at lower price.

Yeah, the iP4000R model has the wireless networking built in. The iP4000 is still $80-100. AR.

. Apparently the new ink tanks aren't quite as bad as I had thought. The contacts are only for getting more accurate "ink level" and "tank empty" warnings. According to an interview in Europe, the tanks are still refillable (as soon as someone matches the new inks), 3rd parties should be able to reverse-engineer them pretty quickly and you can still press the "continue/ignore" button and run them right down to the last drop. But they do have less ink than their current equivalents. One advantage is fade resistance, but you have to also use Canon brand paper (expensive) for the max fade resistance. I wonder how they claim to have achieved this longevity - usually it requires pigmented inks which have drawbacks of their own.

i have the ip 3000 and love it. Though i've learned that the Canon branded ink doesn't really have as good a contrast (esp on black) as the generic brand ink tanks from monsterinkjets.com for 1/20th the price. strange...

Well get it from buy.com per the link above (in Algere's post) - c'mon Smoke, let's get with the program - Newegg isn't the only place to buy hardware. There are price search tools out the wazoo. If one place doesn't have, get it somewhere else...
. And there is also a bunch of new-in-box units on eBay for from $80-90. shipped. They must have hit that OD sale hard!

You got that right Sonic. Like, around 8/28 when I tried to order one and all the rest that had a decent price too.

The iP4000 has been replaced by the iP4200 with the new ink tanks so what is in the channel now is all that there is.
